Its a bad idea from us bronies perspective but for hasbro it makes sense to widen their customer range and get girl teens to buy their products. And instead to risk it with a new series which might go under they try it with a series they know is very popular and well-known already and let their studio/writers change it accordingly to what the new target audience likes/wants to get their stuff to be sold later.
 
Sure, which male brony over 20 cares about highschool cartoons with 6 girls in the main roles? Not that many. Teen girls on the other hand might like that more than us. At least given how well MonsterHigh and WinxClub, etc does.  
And i really think the team behind EqG who also made MLP enjoyable for all can do better than what you see of MonsterHigh. “shudder”  
Even the Barbie cartoon´s more fun than that.

Yeah, I don’t it won’t be award winning/movie of the year or anything, but I don’t expect it to be complete and total garbage either. I think the best thing to do is wait for it to come out before saying either/or.

ANYTHING based on a licensed property is a “cash grab” by the logic some of you are using, but they can be done well so long as the right people work on them. Goldeneye 007 on the N64 could have been as bad as ET if put in the wrong hands, but it was put in the right ones and gave us a licensed game that helped the FPS genre on consoles. Every Transformers cartoon is a cash-in to sell toys, but most of them seem to have done well (including the famous “trukk not munky” one).

But seriously technically whenever a studio ( Disney, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, etc. ) make a movie it’s a shitty cash-grab.
 
It’s up to the Directors, Producers, Writers, Animators, etc. to make something that’s a shitty cash-grab into something memorable and great ( not saying Equestria Girls will be great but I’m not saying it will be bad either ).
 
Kinda like the 86’ Transformers movie it was a shitty cash-grab to get rid of the old toys for there new ones, but the people behind it made it one of the best animated films of the 80’s.
