I’d actually be okay with him being Twilight’s boyfriend if this is the case.

So yeah, we’re probably supposed to notice him as a pony. Though I’m a little unsure of the reason for this.
I do think it would work best if he himself was the guy on the other side and not just his doppleganger.

That is possible, but I doubt they would go to the trouble of introducing a new, uniquely designed character just for the sake of giving him an unrelated human doppelganger. What would be the point?
