The focus is on the protagonists and the antagonist, not the high school romance. He gets a few plot-relevant parts (not mentioned due to spoilers) but the writers mercifully avoided shoveling in forced romance for the sake of forced romance. (cough cough Star Wars prequels cough)

Having seen EqG now, I can honestly say that there is little to fear. He doesn’t steal the spotlight, and he’s a nice guy. He’s roughly the fourth most plot-relevant male character in the movie. Out of five male non-background characters.
Really, that’s about it. He’s attractive (for the artstyle), he’s nice and friendly, and he plays the guitar.

Have not seen the movie either but if he doesn’t have any character faults or something relatable for the audience, then he is flat character and/or “arm candy” for the main character.
I think that was the whole issue when Lola was brought in, good design from Space Jam but no real developed character or looney personality until Looney Tunes show came about and redefined her personality to match the others.
Badly. They need reasons to discredit him, and if he’s a nice guy they have to invent some.
