I’m more or less in Sunset’s camp, but I’m pretty sure Twilight prefers happiness over accomplishment. Sunset Shimmer handing her her daydreams on a silver platter would be a disaster – which would make it all the more interesting of a story to write…
 
It’d also be interesting to see where the rest of the Mane Six ended up in a timeline that was essentially Twilight-less. Probably nowhere particularly impressive…
 
Given that, I could envision Twilight asking Discord for a world where Sunset Shimmer was the fire-brigade princess and she just had some humble, comfortable occupation – resulting in a more friendship-oriented version of this.

Some people want to be ambitious and do absolutely everything because “you only regret what you don’t do”. (There are plenty of things a person could do and regret, but I digress.)
 
Other people just want to be happy with their lives. Maybe they haven’t taken over the world, but they can look back at their memories with satisfaction.
 
Which way is right? Would you be willing to cause yourself a great amount of pain because the gain will be worth it, or would you like something a bit less stressful?

Somepony should write a story about that – maybe even something in which Sunset Shimmer discovers Twilight’s dreams. Rainbow Dash is incredibly grandiose, but she also enables the grandiosity of everypony around her; I could see Sunset Shimmer being like that for ambition…

Twilight’s talents are squandered in this timeline, but she actually looks a little calmer, a little more relaxed. Perhaps her mother’s ambition really was a mistake…

You know, the more I think about that, the more it makes sense to me. It would explain a few things that don’t quite seem to add up in the pivotal moments of the series.

Maybe this is good fanfic fuel.Consider this:Twi gets tired of her mundane job and decides to steal the crown while Sunset is staying at the crystal empire creating the Sunsetverse’s, if you will, version of EG.

It’s probably what really happened, with the events of FiM being Twilight’s fantasies and projecting onto SS to run away from her mundane and boring job as a talentless lower-class janitor unicorn.

The hallucination lasted exactly three seconds of oxygen deficiency until Sunset’s brain shut down. While Twilight and the EqG Elements were merciful, Celestia’s clean-up task force’s methods of ensuring the safety of the monarchy were more reliable and less non-lethal.

I vote we send Deadpool to this alt verse.
