Spike likes Rarity more than he likes gems more than he likes Fluttershy.

If Sparity ever does turn out to be canon (I’m saying IF not WHEN) then watch that exchange with the ruby (which he gave her of his own freewill) turn out to have been a test of what he values more, her happiness or his own stomach. Since she has already had her heart trampled on by at least male and we have indication that he was the first to do so, I can imagine her testing any potential suitor who hasn’t already. Note how she barely said two words about the gem once confronted with a giant dragon (when she didn’t he Spike) and mostly talked about Spike and how the dragon was probably just gonna eat her too. If Spike didn’t want to give it to her, he wouldn’t have. Remember Applejack tried to manipulate him into leaving alone in a recent episode and failed. Then all six of the girls attempted to manipulate him into considering his life debt paid and still they failed. Ultimately that’s been Spike’s most recurrent character trait: his nigh unbeatable freewill. The gem helped snap him back to normal so he probably had been thinking about giving to her for a while but was torn between that and wanting to eat it. He can’t exactly be manipulated very easily at all.

Why does Rarity look twice as happy as Fluttershy? I know these are from different episodes but Rarity seems to be happy partially over a beautiful gift and now being able to do justice to the beauty of that gem in fashion art rather than watch it be treated like food when even still she cared more about the fact that it came from him than the gem itself. Fluttershy just stuck him with the task of watching her abusive pet in exchange for a gem,something she couldn’t less about.

Is this supposed to imply that Fluttershy has a thing for Spike?
