For Big Mac, that has always been my headcanon.  
But I’ve always thought of Derpy as a genuine airhead with a big heart.

I’d say that she’s probably 2nd most intelligent behind Twilight, but that’s mostly because she’s the one with the most common sense (even if she does tend to lose it on occasion).

Agreed for Mac, but Derpy? I mean, she’s not the drooling retard her detractors try to make out her name implies, but what aspect of her many cameos and one speaking appearance suggests she’s even average, much less above average? (Above average flyer/athlete, I’d agree. She lifted a ton of crap before dropping it on Twilight, and her plot is shown to be stronger than lumber.)

Especially for Big Mac. He does have that knowledge of “Fancy Mathematics” after all. And it was said that he’s the one who actually manages the business affairs of Sweet Apple Acres. Applejack just bucks trees and sells the apples.

I’ve always wanted the hyperintelligent hooves  
thing to take off. As for Mac, who do you thing handles the thinking half of Sweet Apple Acres? The artificial selection for the crops, the land ordinances, the water distribution, the taxes? Compensating for all the stupid decisions his family makes? If Mac wasn’t chained to that sinking ship, he’d be rich.
