Its been a term related to literal fishing (like the rod-and-reel kind) for long before the internet was a thing. Its why we use terms like baiting when talking about people trying to troll other people into responding.
In Justice League Unlimited Batman uses the term “flame” correctly, which was pretty surprising.
Especially the freakin’ BATMAN saying it.
It’s actually “trailing”.
It makes more sense that way.
