Just want to point out that I don’t think that earth ponies are useless. This is just a bad joke. I actually have the head cannon that earth ponies have magic that gives them strength and agricultureness, while pegasi have magic in their wings.

Come to think of it, we never do see Sweetie Belle use magic, do we? Maybe it is jumping the gun to say that Scoots has some horrible affliction that means she’ll never ever fly if she lives a million billion years. They’re all late bloomers in one way or another and they’re all about the journey to find yourself and whatnot. (Of course, that interpretation lowers the angsty fanfic potential.)

Sorry to say, but that’s where your argument falls apart. Twilight is a Canon Sue. A Canon Sue isn’t always the Author Avatar, and the Author Avatar can be a different character entirely. The only requirements are that they are already from the material and that they have many of the traits of a Mary Sue. Just because she’s not the Avatar of Faust doesn’t mean she isn’t sue-tiful on the inside.

Okay, first of all, a Possession Sue is what happens when a writer turns a character into his or her own Author Avatar, going back on my notion that Twilight isn’t one of Faust’s. Second, the second version is where I’m basing the definitions of the Canon Sue.

“A Canon Sue is a Mary Sue who happens to be a canonical character. This could be one of two things:

A Possession Sue. It’s more frequently referred to as Canon Sue, but it has its own article.
A professional work in which a canonical character already has the attributes of a Mary Sue.”

Those are literally the first three lines, word for word. I don’t know who wrote that, but they clearly grasp the concept better than you.

No, that’s not correct. It’s actually so in-correct, I just felt the urge to ask you to actually bother troping with a modicum more effort. Granted, there is overlap between the two, but I really doubt that you can call the main character from the once-popular series ‘Saved By The Bell’ a proxy for the writers, despite the fact that he is, in fact, a Canon Sue (of course, with some overlap with Protagonist Centered Morality and Karma Houdini).

Now, see, not all Mary-sues are self-inserts, just like not all self-inserts are Mary-sues. Just because the original examples are self-inserts doesn’t mean they’ve all got to be. After all, how would you explain the ‘Villain Sue’?

Actually, a Canon Sue is what happens when a character is essentially an escapist character for the author. But I hardly believe that Twilight is a dead ringer for Lauren Faust, or anything, right?

@nicktoonhero
Yes. In that case, they are what’s called a ‘canon sue’, which is an inordinately overpowered and impossibly important character who is always considered the best no matter what she does that specifically came from the source material.

Really, she’s not. To quote a friend of mine:
“Mary Sue as a term stemmed from the self insertion original character introduced in a Star Trek fanfiction. If a character is canon to an intellectual property then they may be overpowered in comparison to their peers, but they are not a Mary Sue.”
DuskShadowBrony

This is actually false, especially considering you don’t even have proof to back it up… I’ll look for it now, but Megan McCarthy stated that Scootaloo’s “wing problem” would be addressed in Season 4. As in Scootaloo cannot fly, and never will be able to.
