I should note that that’s how these errors occur in written language. In spoken language, the issue is more about the Japanese sound being used for L and R (because making a sound that’s not in your language is tricky) and it being interpreted by English listeners as the wrong letter.

That’s not how it works. The Japanese sound that begins the syllables ラ, リ, ル, レ, and ロ is just about halfway in between L and R (it has to do mostly with the position of the tongue tip). English words that use R or L both get transliterated into katakana using the kana above, which loses the information of what the letter originally was. So when Japanese works with English loan words are translated into English, mistakes like this happen–both L for R and R for L.

No, they didn’t. In Japanese the “L” for us is an “R” for them, the same as Lucario being “Rucario” instead.
