I don’t know about that, considering (SPOILER) at the end of the game, the game’s entire story, resets, and retcons itself anyways, which would’ve made having it be a “reboot” be pointless anyways.
Plus, the game did have some call-backs to previous Sonic games, like the killer whale.
Actually, the reason why he was workign with GUN was because Sonic ’06 was going to be a total story/narrative reboot, removing all of the backstory from previous games and starting it all from scratch, thus making Shadow have been with GUN all along.
Yay for failed resets.

Playing Sonic 06 over at my cousins’ house, I couldn’t beat the Mach Speed section in Crisis City. Could still beat the Wave Ocean Mach Speed in just two tries though. And somehow S rank the Silver fight as Sonic.
Don’t forget Crisis City. Epic stage.
That was actually one of the VERY few good things about ’06; it showed that Shadow had actually gotten over all that crap and is perfectly content working for GUN.
Haters gatta hate. Not to mention Shadow’s one of the more disliked Sonic characters with older Sonic fans. Younger Sonic fans love him though.
When it comes to Sonic’s dopplegangers/rivals I kinda prefer Metal Sonic, but I have nothing against Shadow. He has his moments. Though, sense he’s reformed, his personal problems have closure, and such, it seems like Sega run out of things to do with him. I kinda like how they made him become an agent of G.U.N. like Rouge though.

To be honest, I thought the Shadow game was “great” compared to “Sonic & the Secret Rings,” and Sonic’06. I liked the “good/neutral/bad” alternate story lines, and stuff which was a nice concept. The problem is the game just didn’t seem finished being made. (In terms of bug-testing, and such.)
To bad the failure of the game killed the chances of any other Sonic character getting their own game… (I want “Tails Adventure 2,” or “Knuckles Chaotix 2.”)

Actually, they did regard Gerald Robotnik made him, the Maria incident, and such, he just needed the Black Arm’s help in order to finish the “Shadow/Ultimate Lifeform” project. The game did clear up some things like why a (formally) peaceful scientist created the Eclipse Canon, and such.
It sucked so much because they completely ignored most of his backstory that is canon. They only went with the ‘He’s the son of an evil alien’ part, ignoring his reason for existing that goes beyond the aversion of the destruction of all life on earth.
I don’t think even the folks at Sega know what the fuck Shadow is anymore. I think they just want to keep him out of the spotlight for the most part considering how much his game sucked and how it raised more questions than it answered.

Shadow was crated by Gerald Robotnik, Maria was his granddaughter(and cousin to Ivo/Eggman), his pride an joy, that’s why.

Oh. I must have heard it wrong….Why would someone want to make the ultimate lifeform in order to save a little girl? I know it’s a noble cause, but why not just make the cure?
That’s his intended purpose. It was never realized, but it’s possible. He was originally created to cure Mobian AIDs.
