She did put him to bed in the show though. Plus there were lots of snuggles, cuddles and hugs between them. And promises she would never send him away or leave him forever. A goodnight kiss and a “I love you Spike.” would be darn adorable though. <3  
That or using her new wings as a blanket ver him when he falls asleep at her side. <3 <3 <3

I want there to be an episode where Twilight is nice to Spike for no other reason than she finally realizes that she is essentially raising the boy. It should end with her carrying him to bed after a great day together, as in this wonderful image, tucking him in and telling him that she loves him before giving him a soft kiss on the cheek as he drifts off to sleep.
 
As long as that happens just once, I swear that I will never complain about anything else in the series ever again. Flash Sentry could marry Twilight in the second act of the episode where he’s introduced, the whole cast could become alicorns, they could introduce a new character who is the most wanton Mary Sue in cartoon history… I’d keep my mouth shut.
 
And I’d do it, because at least I’d know that she does love him, and is capable of telling him so, something that he has been denied throughout the series. No child, especially one in a non-traditional family, should be denied the comfort of knowing that someone loves them, of hearing the words.
