One of those old honorable type of commanders, who happened to be on the wrong side of the war. He treated POWs more humanely than the other commanders of the Third Reich, even punished those who mistreated them. He refused to leave the battlefield even with a severe illness, and he didn’t pull out of Africa until most of his remaining troops left first. Also he spent most of the war on the frontline, personally leading some attacks.
