Luna being a shapeshifter is more-or-less canon. We know she could change forms as Nightmare Moon, so it stands to reason she can do the same as herself.

There’s a bit of a difference between “uses an illusion spell to look like Nightmare Moon” and “OH SWEET PONY JEEZUS RUT, EQUESTRIA’S MOST TERRIFYING FORCE OF EVIL HAS RETURNED FROM BEYOND, WE ARE ALL BRED SIDEWAYS RUN RUN RUN WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE”.

The season four clips have shown Luna transforming, but it’s a stretch to say that it has anything to do with this toy set. Keep in mind that Sunset’s first toy blurb didn’t reveal any plot information, and was only about as informative as the other toy blurbs. It was accurate, but that’s as much as you could say.
 
We already know that Luna can turn into Nightmare Moon at will, and that ponies will stay up for stargazing sessions. Unlike with Sunset Shimmer, none of that is new information. There aren’t even any new characters.
 
At the stroke of midnight… Is too generic a line to be proof of anything.
 
Even when the toys are related to show events, they aren’t giving out plot details. Did the wedding toys reveal the existence of Queen Chrysalis? Did the Princess Twilight toys mention that Twilight got her wings for fixing her own mess? Did the Crystal Empire toys hint at anything about King Sombra?

No, it says that she turns into NMM exactly at Midnight, and then wants to hold a celebration of the stars.
 
Simplified into “Luna becomes NMM for fun”, it’s still too specific to just be random text. The toy department showed with Sunset Shimmer that sometimes the text on the back of the box isn’t just random girly gibberish.

Well, we don’t know very much about the plot other than that short synopsis, so…anything could happen, I suppose. I’m just saying that this seems somewhat plausible, as it’s related to what we know, and too specific to be just random text.

Again: I can’t see Luna turning into Nightmare Moon whenever she wants to be being a thing when she clearly wasn’t trying to turn into her when she got mad at Twilight (thought she was Celestia?) and said she’d be the only princess in Equestria.

I’m not trying to prove myself right, I’m just interested in researching this a bit, because this specific back-of-box text seems to be an anomaly.
 
I haven’t seen the text for the 2nd Favorites set, but the first Favorites set just had some generic text about NMM in a single text box. This one has two text boxes.
 
I’m unsure that they’d put this much text just for “an excuse for NMM to appear”.

Enh. All the text does is provide an excuse for Nightmare Moon to appear. This isn’t even like Sunset Shimmer’s blurb, which didn’t tell half the story with her.

This is true, but remember that Luna has willingly disguised herself as NMM in the past. (Luna Eclipsed)
 
I dunno, this back-of-box text just seems too specific to NOT be related to an actual episode.

Luna made herself smaller and lighter in color to soften her image. Her normal appearance is closer to Nightmare Moon. This is my new head canon.

Luna appeared to be getting genuinely mad in the preview, and acted surprised when the nightmare forces overtook her.

Why not? With the S4 opener containing both the summer sun celebration and Nightmare Moon, it certainly seems plausible.

Anyway, we’ve actually seen Luna turn into Nightmare Moon for fun, but that’s an unexpectedly cool detail for the toys.

How come some names are copyrighted and some are trademarked?
