When Aeris was attracted to Cloud, she immediately got him to spend more time with her. When she realized she could save the world, she set out on her own without Cloud because she wanted to protect him.
Tifa is in love with Cloud at the start of the game and waits around for him to do something about it, which he doesn’t because he’s a gloomy jerk. When she hears him bizarrely tell a story she knows cannot possibly be true but which he has no reason to lie about, she keeps quiet about it, which turns out to be the exact wrong thing to do.
Tifa is a wimp. It’s a thing the game is deliberately doing. The real meat of this game is how every character except Aeris is self-defeating and how they finally manage to get over it.
