She DIDN’T want them to sleep. That was the point.
It can be all of that and the previously mentioned below.
It’s possible that the ponies back in those days didn’t exactly appreciate her horning in on their dreams. Having her biggest talent rejected by the populace would have led to quite a bit of resentment.
And this is the true horror of “The Night Will Last Forever”: As Nightmare Moon, Princess Luna wanted the Eternal Night so that her little ponies would sleep. Forever. So that she could rule them in their dreams. Forever.
She can have dominion over dreams and still be unappreciated.
True one can forget dreams, but lucid dreams and handling of personal issues doesn’t seem to be quite so fleeting in the episode where this particular facet of her responsibilities was revealed.
Well you do forget your dreams.
I have a theory. That she is asleep herself when she enters others dreams and because she is conscious she doesn’t get much REM Sleep. So she slowly becomes unbalanced and paranoid.
Just a thought.
