It’s possible that the ponies back in those days didn’t exactly appreciate her horning in on their dreams. Having her biggest talent rejected by the populace would have led to quite a bit of resentment.

And this is the true horror of “The Night Will Last Forever”: As Nightmare Moon, Princess Luna wanted the Eternal Night so that her little ponies would sleep. Forever. So that she could rule them in their dreams. Forever.

True one can forget dreams, but lucid dreams and handling of personal issues doesn’t seem to be quite so fleeting in the episode where this particular facet of her responsibilities was revealed.
I have a theory. That she is asleep herself when she enters others dreams and because she is conscious she doesn’t get much REM Sleep. So she slowly becomes unbalanced and paranoid.
Is it just me, or did the revelation in season 3 that she also tends to dreams.. and interacts with ponies in dreamscapes sort of punch a huge hole in her ‘nopony cares/nopony plays under the moon’ angle? Because from where I’m sitting, she practically got the entire population literally living their dreams during her nights…
aaaand heading off to work and heaping bureaucracy during the day-court.
Look at the rich pony and her rich pony problems. The peasants who paid for her castle, maintain it and grow the food she eats aren’t taking enough time to lick her hooves for doing the same job her predecessors did.
Killing them all is the obvious answer here. #Alicorn Problems
She DIDN’T want them to sleep. That was the point.
It can be all of that and the previously mentioned below.

She can have dominion over dreams and still be unappreciated.

Well you do forget your dreams.

Just a thought.
