That he is.
Tons of potential though, that’s why I like him.
He’s just a really weird character in general.
@Itsthinking
That’s what I figured.
I mean, biology is one thing, whatever dragon species he ends up beloging to, that won’t change at all unless they play with the “hatched by Twilight’s magic” thing…but in terms personality, customs, mannerisms, etc…the show has been quite clear that his “unnatural” upbringing has made him extremely different from other dragons.
Him being so passionate about his love for Rarity could simply be yet another point in the long long list of differences caused by him being raised by ponies instead.
Or just an effect of being raised in a pony society in general.
I’d quite forgotten about the gem dragons, and certain aspects could fit. Only part that would be iffy is the dispassionate way they mate. Given his crush on Rarity, it’s obvious Spike isn’t that dispassionate. On the other hand, it could simply be youthful exhuberance or an effect from being raised by Celestia.
Again, it all depends if they really want to change him physically. And how they do it. Any growth through an act of generosity is going to bring up some obvious questions.
Regarding the D&D thing…what about the gem dragons? They’re a 3rd category aside from the chromatic & metallic dragons.And among them, are the amethyst dragons, a group they could make Spike belong to due to the color of his scales.
@Itsthinking
So basically, being neutral lets him stay as a kid, being greedy makes him grow “badly” (monstruous form), and being generous reverts the effects of greed once he’s fallen too deep into it, but, if he’s on his neutral state then it lets him grow into a different form?
Yeah, I can actually see that.
I was thinking that was what you might mean, though I was thinking of that in Discworld terms.
Think of it like a dial. You’ve got to turn back to the center before you can get to another extreme.
Except it made him shrink in the show.
Could go with the “generosity made him grow” or something.
Another emotion would be interesting, though I think it would probably be a “negative” emotion. I say that since it seems like the writers follow a lot of the D&D tropes (natch) like dragons being always evil, and Spike is the sole exception. Well, I should say chromatic dragons are always evil. There’s also metallic dragons, which are good, but the only metallic dragon I can think of that might be described as purplish is the Platinum Dragon, but there’s only one of those and he’s the metallic dragons’ god. Then again, given that Spike was raised by the pony equivalent of a god, maybe that’s not so farfetched…
The last option isn’t the best. I still think there’s a way for dragons to grow without greed. Maybe growing naturally, or through another emotion?
They’ve left things open so writers can do a lot. Hopefully they do something.
He could grow slowly (centuries/millenia) and remain that size for the entire story, or he could have a growth spurt maybe up to “teen size” (maybe a little smaller) which would be cool, or heck, they could even make it so the only way for him is to grow is through greed so that he’ll normally remain that size through his life but has the chance to temporally grow by letting a bit of focused greed take over.
The possibilities are truly endless.
@bico-kun
I also believe his “unique” hatching is somethign the authors can very easily work with to make him, in turn, work/grow in a completely unique way as well.
Oh, if there’s one thing we know is that she knows about his feelings. It’s just that…if she didn’t feel something more, wouldn’t she just say it right away? The way her character is being built kind of thinks that she thinks he’ll grow out of it, but I doubt that.
For him AND Rarity.
A lot of her interactions with him (especially the ones above) would reflect pretty poorly on her character if, in addition to knowing his feelings, she let them go on this long. I honestly think the comic will be the closest we’ll get to seeing their unique situation addressed ‘seriously’: let alone having it resolved in some way.
Unless the finale takes some cues from Digimon’s S2 finale or something like that.
We just don’t know enough. I really hope we see something.
It is. I’ve gone with an explanation that there are common dragons who grow very quickly to gigantic size via greed and there are “noble” dragons who grow normally. I tend to think these dragons would still reach adulthood at least as quickly as a pony, but would still be relatively small at that point. They’d either stay small or, like tortoises and other such animals, would grow slowly throughout their lives even after adulthood. Of course, I also tend to think Spike would be different from any other dragon, anyway, since I suspect that Twilight hatching him actually had a deep effect on him. Again, though, that’s a lot of assumption based on a very little information.
Hopefully it would be Corey Powell. You know what would be better? Can McCarthy just go all out and write an episode for him already? For crissakes, he was better and more competent as a dog than he was in some of the episodes written by Williams. At least she gets the kind of character Spike is.
I just hope its not Merri with a bad episode.
I would have… mixed feelings.
Wings? Thanks,
M.A. LarsonMeghan McCarthywhoever writes that episode!Really, I’d like to see him grow since Twilight has as well. Wings would just be a part of it.
That would be awesome. Wings would be a nice plus.
But see, then they’d have to come up with a reason and explain more about about dragons. It’s quite a tall order. Honestly, they could just explain that some of the growth is natural and some of it is based on greed. But I really want to see his character grow both mentally and physically.
It would be already time to make him grow up a little, i mean, how long has it been since the show started? I hope they dont keep him at the same age as they did with Ash from pokemon.
