Starswirl, in my humble opinion, probably just wants to be left alone at this piont.
because maybe starswirl died in the princesses castle and some magical elements of harmony stuff happened

it turned him into a spirit but the spirit was half good half bad and celestia locked him deep inside the castle for like 1000 years then castle mania came along, celestia didn’t tell the ponies because it was a secret. the reason why? it’s unknown.
