It’s not so much that they need the ideas, but rather it’s free marketing research.
Hilarious. At this point, it’s like every idea the show could ever use has already been used in fanwork so someone yelling “I KNEW IT” at any given plot is inevitable.

Writers of shows take a lot more input from fans than you would ever believe, they just tend to not admit it at all due to legal issues.
Look at it this way: If an episode coincidentally has a plot that coincides with fanon, it’s “OMG SO AWESOME I CALLED IT I KNEW IT” with a few scattered cries of “Pandering”.
If they admittedly take an idea from fanon, it’s “OMG PANDERING THEY STOLE IDEAS SO TERRIBLE” with, believe it or not, the possibility of a lawsuit.
I think they were really just copying Monster High and saying that fanwork influenced them was just an attempt to placate us.
I know we’ve gotten shiptease in the show before, though very subtle, it’s almost entirely the work of the animators, not the writers.
Maybe not Derpibooru specifically. But it has been said that all the humanized fanworks was what led to Equestria Girls. So who knows what ideas they get from us?

No, there’s just an incredible backlog of this stuff so I’ve been uploading it little by little. Just be glad I’m not doing it all at once.
