You… haven’t really read the synopsis, then. The point of the ep is that Rarity has a crush on Trenderhoof, but as he arrives in Ponyville, he has a crush on APPLEJACK. No mention of her returning it.

Nothing wrong with having a waifu, at least until people start to bring the fact that they have one into arguments where it’s largely irrelevant to everyone but themselves.

My guess is that Trenderhoof is one of those popular fashion models that Rarity happens to admire.

The ones who have a legitimate reason for disliking it, such as “It may not be able to be done correctly, thus making it bad for the show” certainly have a right to be worried.
 
The people upset solely because of waifus are using personal reasons that are highly valid to themselves, but don’t really hold any value whatsoever in a debate about whether or not it’s a good thing for the show. I don’t think they are in the wrong for having a waifu or even being upset/disappointed, as that’s a legitimate personal problem, even if it seems odd to some people, but if they are using “Muh waifu…” as an argument against others or as an argument against adding shipping in the show, then that is certainly a waste of time. People need to find legitimate arguments against canon shipping even if they are only using them because they have a waifu, and such arguments DO exist if they would put some thought into it.

Personally I think the clowns who do that are just as bad, if not worse, than the people complaining in the first place. That includes the people who spout the terribly annoying ‘waifu thief’ meme, which is quite possibly the only meme that has ever legitimately bothered me.
