It’s been 9 days since he’s posted a comment, or, apparently, done anything here. So yeah, I’m wondering if he’s given up on DB, and is just hanging around /mlp/, or left altogether.

Since they were trying to compete with Monster High, she almost certainly did have at least semi-specific guidelines to follow. Including the love-interest for example (‘market research tells us tween girls like -’), the whole high-school setting, maybe something about including songs, possibly the whole ‘mean girl’ conflict…I dunno. She probably had at least some freedom with the actual storyline. If so, I certainly don’t think it’s up to her usual standard of writing. If I viewed the movie without ever seeing the show, I’d probably think it was sorta OK, but overall it can’t compete with her writing for the show (and no, I’m not saying all her episodes were perfect, but many are pretty darn good). The design team probably had their fair-share of guidelines or at least suggestions on what the characters should look like.
Thing is, people assume that the crew either hated working on it, or absolutely blindly love it, but something a little more in the middle is much more likely. I don’t think they were forced into or hate it, but I also don’t think Meghan has as much leverage as Lauren had to protest any of their ideas, even if she wanted to, and I can’t say if she does. All I know is that many, many, many other creative people working in animation, and other mediums, almost always are hindered creatively by the network execs, sometimes with incredibly stupid requests. With Pony, it’s not just the network they have to negotiate with, it’s the toy company who owns the network. I just hope Hasbro doesn’t push too hard…
Honestly, I didn’t have an opinion on the writing of the movie before it aired, as I hadn’t seen it, and was never worried about the actual content of the movie, just, well…the fact that it existed, so it was such a painfully predictable situation that the movie would turn out to be better than most people expected, simply because their expectations were as low as they could be. And because of that, many people like it a lot more than they ever would if their expectations would have been more neutral (/mlp/ is a great example of this).
I’m not saying that people don’t have a reason to like it, and I don’t have anything against people who do, but I personally think the quality isn’t close to that of the show. However, that’s not, and has never been the real issue here, in my opinion, even though, admittedly, there were certain aspects of the movie that could be argued as going against certain ideals the show has, or just don’t provide a good example for the target demo (the whole Brad thing, and the fact that they are pretty much anorexic, for example).
The really frustrating thing about this whole situation is the fact that Hasbro expects the crew to take their ideas and make them watchable, instead of just giving them the freedom to work on the show as they want, with maybe a bit of input. Already enough corporate control that creators have to constantly fight against with other networks, without stuff like this on top of the usual conflicts. While the writers and DHX are perfectly capable of taking almost any idea and sprucing it up, that doesn’t mean they should have to. That’s not the kind of process that encourages quality content. Plus, it’s so frustrating how much conflict it’s caused within the fandom. I wish more people could just state their opinions in a civil way, instead of hating on others for either disliking it, which I see a LOT of, or hating on people who enjoyed it, or even worse, the crew of the show. If anyone deserve the flack, it’s Hasbro’s marketing department, but even they shouldn’t be hated on.
To be fair, we don’t know what sort of constraints they placed on her for EQG. When the execs say “Do it like this”, you do it like that, or you “never work in this town again”.
