Oh, and I would not be surprised if Shout! Factory tried a Kickstarter approach, since that tends to run well with bronies and guarantees at least initial investment from diehard fans.

Well, yeah, this has been a thing since the first EqG. I get the feeling this run will be straight-to-video but heavily advertised.
 
As I’ve already said in another thread, I believe we are close to or already at the point where a Blu-ray release is warranted. Should it happen, it’ll probably be a deluxe boxset release targeted to bronies and hardcore fans who would care more about this. Shout! Factory (the DVD and EqG Blu-ray distributor) is likely waiting for the current boxsets and the character-themed DVDs to run their course until they even consider such a step, so I would pin it at next year, maybe late this year if we’re lucky.
 
BTW, there is a German Blu-ray S1 set, with sublime picture quality, but it has uncorrected PAL speedup!!!

As I recall, there originally was a concern that even DVDs wouldn’t sell enough to justify the cost of making them. The early fandom was passionate yes, but Shout wasn’t sure if it could make the numbers. I forget if the minimum is tens or hundreds of thousands of units, but it’s quite signifcant.
 
I think it started making DVDs because those were cheaper. I think a lot of it is because MLP:FIM is still in uncharted waters, where a lot of other properties have an established fanbase.
 
I support buying the DVDs for now (all three seasons) to prove there is a market for them. I’m hoping that we’ll eventually get a Blu-ray set in North America.

It’s not like Blu-Ray is the future in the present or anything…

Equestria Girls is a movie, though. (And a really good one at that.) I imagine if it gets a series based on it (as I hope) it won’t have a Blu-Ray for the seasons either. I wish all MLP had Blu-Rays, though.

So, how come I’ve got an official blu-ray set (3 discs) of MLP:FIM season 1 right here in front of me? Granted, it’s in German and the original English audio is only available in stereo, not 5.1, but that’s good enough for me.

MLP:FiM definitely would be selling better than a lot of movies.

Movies generally sell better than tv shows.
