“I think you’re terribly misunderstanding my points here. I’m saying progression happened because we didn’t let tradition hold us back”
And that’s not at all true. Yes some people where held back, but most where not. It was usually the churches that where funding research, mostly to understand gods creation. Sometimes priests would find something that did upset the church, but that was a rare occurrence.
“You’re generalizing a bit here. Not all inventions oppose ideology and cause contention.”
No shit, i never said that.
I think you’re terribly misunderstanding my points here. I’m saying progression happened because we didn’t let tradition hold us back. There were points where some scientists and philosophers were put under scrutiny because their discoveries were in direct opposition of things like religion, government and tradition, they challenged what people thought they knew. In most cases, the accusers saw reason and chose not to stand in the way of progress and the pursuit of knowledge. For example, learning more about space caused commotion in the Christian church, but they got over it.
You’re generalizing a bit here. Not all inventions oppose ideology and cause contention.
Well see, that’s where you’re wrong. It had nothing to do with tradition getting in the way, it was just natural progression the Renaissance happened. It had more to do with increasing trade from around the world, and competition for resources, as well as the invention of the printing press.
I am aware that the Dark Ages were not this backwards time of madness like some people believe. What I’m saying is, there were traditions that attempted to stand in the way of progress, and only when they were ignored or discarded did things get back on track.
No need to start throwing around memes and reddit accusations.
The dark ages are a meme, the churches where the places where knowledge was stored. Priests where the scientists of the past. The ‘dark ages’ was a term coined during the dark ages because of a decline in Latin literature. It has nothing to do with any sort of statement on the dark ages in modern times, historians call the dark ages the early Middle Ages.
You seem to have a very EUPHORIC reddit view of history. While plenty of times religion has contradicted science, more often science was about understanding gods creation. https://www.quora.com/Why-did-science-make-little-real-progress-in-Europe-in-the-Middle-Ages-3
Also some tradition is bad some is good, some change is bad some is good. It really depends on a lot of things. Bull fighting is a tradition of one modern progressive society, and seeing how the society that practices it is flourishing, saying it has no place in the modern world is just wrong.
No, that’s Human nature. Most places where people are free and not punished for questioning things are full of people who question things. Most places where people are forbidden to question are backwards. But like I said, that’s not tradition, it’s Human nature, so it’s not in favor of either of our points.
You are also implying tradition started recently. Imagine if we never strayed away from traditions thousands of years in the past. Scientists were stymied in Europe(and sometimes in the USA later) during the Dark Ages through to the renaissance because their discoveries were contradicting their Religions. Human Sacrifice was also a tradition in some places. Bull fighting and animal cruelty are traditions from a long time ago, which have no place in the modern world.

That’s not true at all. Tradition isn’t a dogmatic set of rules, it’s a way of personal living. It’s tradition in America to question the FUCK out of authority because this is a nation founded on rebellion, every single constitutional right is based around questioning authority.
Adherence to tradition is not inherently a good thing. If we adhered to traditions we’d be a thousand years behind what we are now.
Thats not true, humans are just lazy and don’t plan for the future enough. Or follow tradition.
