Visually. I think they did that on purpose for a throw-away gag in the first place (we never do see any other manticores).
However, they did do the same gag with the Ursa Minor/Ursa Major. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they also say that the Major is the mother as well? I at least remember the 3 second clip at the end of the episode with it nursing the minor.
As for the chimera being able to move “swiftly” as it did, not every creature that is born is completely helpless for months on end until it is older. I feel ashamed for not remembering any animals like that off the top of my head though. I just remember that humans were one of the few animals that have the longest period of time where they need to be nurtured supposedly because of their brains are so complex.
I used to watch animal planet all the time too. Stinks when a piece of trivia that comes up in your territory and you forget what it is, especially when you know you’ve seen it. =)
Generally when cartoons look as simple as FiM’s is, I go by size, but apparently you can’t even go by that. So I generally just go by what the show says.
First off, when does anyone say that the Manticore was a baby? It was the size of a horse-drawn carriage, there’s no way that was a baby. Second, most of the creatures in equestria have at least some form of language, and Fluttershy can understand all non-pony languages. She was even able to speak Norwegian for an episode.
Are you sure she meant it was a literal baby when she called it that? It looked very much like a mature creature.
We’ve only seen a Baby Manticore though. Spike is also a Baby Dragon. It seems babies are excluded from this rule, probably because they haven’t had time to think about stuff. Then again we don’t know if Manticores become smarter later in their life in the world of MLP (I’d be surprised if they didn’t though).
maybe it’s just larger reptiles in particular she can’t handle.
And yet, she treats Manticores (the only creature in any mythology characterized by a specific taste for intelligent creatures) and similarly dangerous creatures like housepets.
Animals in general are very simple. If you know everything about an animal there’s nothing to be afraid of.
Dragons have similar intelligence levels to that of ponies. The higher intelligence is more dangerous because they think about more things than just basic needs much more in-depth. Which can lead to behavior that can seem somewhat random.
Considering Shy is very cautious around normal ponies, try imagine those same fears being added to creatures that have a reputation for doing terrible things, and clearly have the power to do so. I can understand her fear.
If Dungeons and Dragons can differentiate between animals and Magical Beasts, so can she.
Yet she’s terrified of Dragons…
It’s one of Fluttershy’s flaws: she really can’t see the bad side of an animal until you make her.
Seems legit.
YOU’RE overrated!
That’s what you call a mature and insightful rebuttal. That said, I only got about 300 hours playtime in the game, so obviously I am a completely neutral third party and everything I say should be taken as such. No bias here!
It’s a reference to the emotionless, overlogical character Presea (apparently voiced by Tara Strong) from the game Tales of Symphonia.
Dear God that game was overrated.
Wouldn’t want to live in OP’s head.
