I think it’s better that he didn’t have to wear the yoke due to any neck injuries. I think he only wears it because “Why the fuck not”?

Wood would warp, and he’s been shown using it to drive the plow, ruining it just for fun swimming wouldn’t make sense. But it does work in case of an emergency.
