Clearly, Lee is comic book illiterate, and I’m not sure what DC was getting at in this comic, or for that matter what the fuck they’ve been doing for a long time now.

Nah, the relationship was right out in the open.
The cartoon on the other hand just had Slade say something like “her body, my control” and had something that looked a lot like symbolized rape. But that was subtle enough that moms and feminists didn’t get their panties in a bunch over it.

The animated series, yes. The original comic books from the ‘80s that the animated series was based on, not so much. (For starters, Slade’s name in the comics was Deathstroke the Terminator, and I’ve read it was rather heavily implied he was in a physical relationship with Terra – who was 15 at the time.)
