I have often suggested that pony eyes are in fact mostly flat: a layer of cornea, a layer of sclera with an iris with a lens in the middle that can move around on top of a layer of vitreous humor, and then a layer of retina.
 
You lose quite a lot of focal distance but the lens might be very strong.
