Usually, with past episodes references, they mean actually events being referenced, not just continuity. The bowties are references, but enything else isn’t
As for SomE, there aren’t many parallels. Unlike Spike’s, Rarity rampage was something she had no control over, there was absolutely no romantic angle this time, and the whole thing was spike’s responsibility. There was no counterpoint.
Show consistencies don’t count.
Uhm I’m not sure if we’ve been watching the same episode, but there were plenty of past episode references. Take a look at the continuity post from Reddit:
Spike loving/helping/being subservient to Rarity has been a theme for him since he first saw her in Friendship is Magic, part 1 (S01E01). (/u/Master-Thief)

This episode is an interesting counterpoint to how Spike went on a rampage, started and ended by Rarity, in Secret of My Excess (S02E10.
Btw not just the fainting couch returns but this whole episode screamed Lesson Zero 2.0 to me. Character getting more and more insane with each minute. Also Twilight walked in with her mane being exactly as messy as it was in that episode

What? I was pretty sure she was there. It’s near the beginning, for a split second, and she’s next to Sparkler. Or maybe it’s one of Derpy’s clones that look similar at a distance, I don’t know. I need to re-watch it once I get access to the video.
And ships never really die for some fans, no matter what the writers try to do to dissuade them. The Big Bang Theory has done everything in the last four seasons to sink the possibility of Sheldon/Penny, and it’s never truly worked. So Sparity will always exist anyway.
Sadly it’s true. And I’m expecting Pia-sama make an art picture from this episode. (Since she’s a big Sparity shipper) :P
