Yeah, I’m willing to bet English is pretty prevalent in Norway. And I agree, even though it irks me I can get past it. You’re spot on with fanfics, though; if you don’t know the difference between your and you’re, or they’re, there, and their, then there’s probably going to be many more grammatical/spelling errors and I’m not going to read your fic.
Norway you say? I would think they are fairly well developed. Then again, I live in western Europe myself, and we have like, different ‘levels’ of what I think the US calls high school.
English in elementary school is generally crap (literally the first thing our teacher in high school said was “forget everything you learned about English in elementary school”), but there still are high school levels where I think English isn’t a mandatory course.
It also depends on interests I think; my own English only really picked up after high school, when I started reading books for fun again, became more active on the internet, started watching English series without subtitles, etc.
On the overall though, as long as it gets the message across (and it means there is more pony) I frankly don’t really care*.
* = fanfics excluded. no srsly I won’t read your fic if there’s like 5 errors every sentence.
Agreed. I’d probably give them a pass if they are from a country where English is not often used and/or just not taught in that country’s respective education system.
Edit: After looking at the artist’s deviant art page, I see they are from Norway. I think English is pretty prevalent there, though I could be wrong. I’m a bad European expat and don’t know much about Norway :-\
… yeah that was meant at @irishtiger
Gotta love how I kinda contradicted myself there by saying I usually pick up on those things, and then reply to the wrong person
I think you replied to the wrong person, mate
… Damn, I normally pick up on this sort of thing. But yeah, I really don’t know how people keep mixing those up, unless they’re not getting taught English anywhere in school, in which case they should be getting taught English in school. I mean come on, apart from actual conversation and some mail, I’m pretty much favouring English over my native language at this point.
In other news *looks at Tag Changes* well at least I know why I forgot the princess tag: I just typed in
twidash
and I know that impliesrd
andts
, so… yeah. Eh, it just once again confirms my suspicion from a few months back, namely that when thinking oftwilight
I don’t mind whether it’s the unicorn or the princess.I didn’t ‘forget’ it on purpose though, and I’ll try and remember to add it in the future.
