No, most animals lack a sense of identity because they don’t have the brain power to think “i am me, and not you.” Animals that do have a semblance or form of identity are highly social species, and it is not as complex as ours, or it is formed differently and has a different or modified function.

What you guys don’t seem to take mind of is that animals don’t have a sense of identity, and for the ones that do have a high enough cognitive power to have a sense of identity, their brain structures are entirely different to ours, and the way they self-identify is entirely different due to their own natural instincts and protocultures.
 
Evidence suggests that at least some of the cause of gender identity dysphoria is because of genetics or prenatal environment (internal environment, brain structure, etc.).
 
I mean really, most of the “otherkins” I’ve ever encountered are really just zoophiles who think living as an animal would be super cool because “cheetah speed!” or “elephant strength!,” and even “super cute!” What they don’t take into account is that animals in the wild are really just these little furballs made of stress, always at work finding food or a mate and with no time or capability to give much thought on identity. They’re giving human qualities to animals that don’t have them.
 
Identity disorders are a human trait. Animals generally don’t give a shit and do what they feel like, even the more “effeminate” males or “butch” females of the species.

Well… if we can discuss on friendly terms, that’s another story…. But I’m sick to death of this discussion today, Derpibooru is drowning in this sort of thing today for some damn reason. I’ll just leave off by saying I just think it’s easier on everyone to let them be what they want to be in this case, and that it’s different from the whole gopher thing because what they want to act like is significantly more reasonable.
 
But… I’ll say it’s possible I’m wrong. I believe that’s an important thing to remember, and I’d hate to be a bigot. Either way, I’m unsubscribing from this damned thread now, I’ve given myself a headache. Thanks for helping me end this on a far more civilized note than 99% of internet arguments.

(sigh) I’m arguing on the internet. I has a big argument types up and then I realized I was arguing on the damn internet. I realize I’m not gonna change your mind, and I don’t wanna be your enemy or anything. I just don’t think telling them they’re wrong and that they should think differently is a productive solution to the problem, is all. It feels more like “Please call me Bob, not Robert” than like “Please think of me as a giant tentacle potato with twenty asses” to me since they’re just asking to be viewed as something normal for a human being to be, but… I realize I can sit here and type until the cows come home and not change your mind. Let’s just… agree to disagree and call a truce, alright? This isn’t getting either of us anything.

Personally I see little difference, the mind is amazing but it can be broken so easily and in so many ways that people can be led to believe almost anything, even if they’re the ones convincing themselves.

Because I never stated that they were stable, because reality itself destabilizes them because, what do you know, they aren’t what they wish they are. There is a reason suicide and attempts at suicide are such a big thing amongst multiple communities of this sort (including those who believe they are part of system of multiple minds within a body), and not doing anything about just ultimately lead to people hating themselves unless everyone around them tells them their particular delusion is true. Can you guess what we do in all other situations where a person believes something which isn’t true? And why it is that we do that?

But that’s a wrong assumption. You actually believe otherkins are some sort of shut in that do not actually work? Whatever mental problems they might, or might not, have, these people still function in society (arguably, in a very broken manner) and still have jobs and other things, because being a gopher doesn’t preclude them needing to eat.

Alright, I’ll counter by saying that identifying as another gender can still produce a person who is capable of functioning in society and identifying as a gopher leads to a person who spends all day popping in and out of holes in their lawn.

That sounds more like a cop-out more than anything. I can easily argue that a person who identifies as a gopher finds themselves in a situation where the demands of being a human are too much and their view of how a gopher should act and be treated makes them feel more comfortable being a gopher, but that makes no lick of sense, and you can extend the argument from there.
