There was an actor called Wilford Brimley, who did ads promoting awareness of diabetes. He would pronounce it as “diabeetus”.
 
People thought it was funny so they use that misspelling instead.

Why do so many people spell “diabetes” like that?  
It’s just bad grammar or is there something I’m missing?
