Or Equestria is actually Earth in the very far future, and the Tree of Harmony is an advanced technological relic left by an extinct race of hyperintelligent, bipedal primates.
 
Said primates also genetically engineered earth ponies as skilled labor, Pegasi to control atmospheric conditions, and unicorns to keep the lunar and planetary orbits in place.
