As a writer myself, I can’t stand literary snobs who turn their noses up at anything that isn’t written like Hemingway. Background Pony was better-written than most popular fiction these days, and the style lent a lot to the atmosphere, in my opinion.
 
If you don’t like the story, I don’t care. I just wish literary types would stop being so dogmatic with their tastes. If authors aren’t free to find their own voice, independent of conventional wisdom, than we end up with literature that all sounds the same.

Using five thousand words where fifty will do is not “poetic.” It’s pointless verbosity, and it turned BP from an interesting metaphysical exploration into a pile of flavorless treacle.

It’s only purple prose if the word choice gets in the way of the meaning. Just being somewhat poetic doesn’t make it inaccessible. If anything, I think the way it’s written adds a lot to Lyra’s wistful nature.

I can’t fathom why this fic is so damn popular. The concept is interesting, but holy purple prose, Batman. Reading it was like trying to wade through quick-dry cement.
