Am I mistaken on this?
I said she’d pull off a Sonic Rainboom. I didn’t say she’d walk away from the landing afterwards.
Kinda like if you would let me drive a race car. I have my drivers license but no experience with driving a race car. I would, just like Twilight, have lots of problems with keeping myself in control.
Magic-wise I would guess she is near pre-alicorn Twilight level. Personally I see magic as a factor, but not the only factor. Even without the power boost Twilight likely has more magic than Rainbow Dash, but she doesn’t have the experience, talent, drive, or muscle-tone. So basically she’s working with more fuel, but a significantly clunkier engine.
Twilight knows absolutely nothing about flight except that you have to flap your wings, and up until she grew wings she had never once needed to learn anything about energy distribution because the spell did it for her. Add to that, even if she did have experience restricting her own power, it was as a Unicorn, and thus not valid.
Twilight wasn’t trying to fly at super-speed, though – if anything, she was trying to put a damper on the energy coursing through her and making her go fast against her will. If she hadn’t been fighting it, she probably would’ve pulled off a Sonic Rainboom.

Twilight’s only had her wings for a few months at best. It’s not unreasonable to assume that the same situations that affect a pegasus foal’s flight capabilities are in play.

she can not do a sonic boom easily and twilight was going at super speed without pushing her self at all.
so if twilight was to push it to the max she might enter hyper sonic speeds.
Yeah, but this means Rainbow had more Physical magic than four alicorn princesses. The Rainbowverse AU just became slightly more plausible.

If a Pegasus’ speed is dependent on magic, and Twilight gets a substantial boost when empowered with the power of four Alicorns and was still unable to pull off a Sonic Rainboom, then that means Rainbow had a literal ass-ton of magic on her own.
