TL;DR
Also, if 20 people laugh, and 1 person tries to get you banned from the radio/campus/show/club, it’s pretty clear whose fault it is.
I never liked that phrase, because it’s an absolute. And comedy is entirely dependent on the skill of the comedian. If Carlos Mencia told a rape joke, it’s likely not going to be funny because not only is a rape joke incredibly difficult to do well, but Carlos Mencia is a hack.
Ditto for Seth Macfarlane, Dane Cook, and Trey Parker.
The question one must as is “Why are rape jokes funny?” Is it entirely because it has a 100% chance of making someone feel insulted? That’s not comedy, that’s message board trolling. Rape jokes in and of themselves are not funny because rape itself isn’t funny. It’s simply an action. The circumstances, the exaggerations, and the mindset of the people involved is what makes a joke funny.
George Carlin’s ever famous routine about rape makes jokes about rapists, and rape culture (“she was asking for it” excuses, ect) by both blowing them up to ridiculous extremes and mocking them. A joke that ends with someone getting raped isn’t funny. Not just because it’s a tasteless subject but because you haven’t made a joke. You’ve made a statement.
As a comedian myself, when someone expresses offense at a joke I’ve made, I always ask myself “Are they too sensitive, or am I a bad comedian? People can laugh at taboo subjects all the time, so why was it a failure here?”
I view telling a joke that fails to make somebody laugh as a failure on my part. A comedian who’s only laughter is her own is a bad comedian.
Looking at the comments, Poe’s Law is definitely in effect.
Mhmm. Everytime something controversial is brought up, people take offense. I say if cute technicolor lesbian ponies know how to take a joke, then why can’t we? (there isn’t even any blood or gore)
Rape jokes are funny, feminists continue not to be.
do you even understand the concept of parody?
Well, it’s good to see you’re alive.
Yes, they call them “mouthpieces”.
A terrible habit.
Anyone can make a character say anything that they want. Doesn’t change anything because they’re just a blank character and not a real person.
What can you tell us, Reiduran?
Keep in mind the Cake twins can’t speak yet…
Also, stop saying “she”. Rape is an equal opportunity profession.
I’ve been around, just not extremely vocal.
