Hmm, that would be interesting. Giving each of the other mane five story arcs that last a season or so. Kind of like what they did in Teen Titans.
{I can’t wait for RD’s solo villain fight. It’s going to be epic!}
But honestly, yeah, she’d be the logical next step with another arc with all her potential. {It’s sad, because while I would rather see an arc about Applejack, there’s nothing you really could do with her as of now. She’s pretty much the straight mare, most of the time.}
And yes, she pretty much just talks to Twilight, but that’s not really her fault. The show doesn’t let Celestia have much screentime, so any dialogue shared between other characters then Twilight must mean something.
Interesting deduction you came across.
Yes, those are quite likely possibilities. Maybe they’ll continue down that road of RD’s role in Season 5? They can’t possibly focus more attention on Twilight anymore after last episode, and they made RD the main character in the new EG movie, so one logical conclusion is that the new storyline will focus on RD and the origin of the elements.
I’ll take a look at your fic sometime soon. :) While most of my MLP ones are still in the works, I’m a pretty good a fanfic writer myself and would gladly give you some useful criticisms and thumbs up if you want. :D
Celestia justifications ARE odd and selective, but there are some interesting bits and pieces. While Celestia rarely talks to the other 5 directly, sometimes Rarity or Fluttershy…I do recall one exchange in S1 that was a surprising compliment.
Rarity: “Princess Celestia, I’m sorry I ruined the competition. Rainbow Dash here really is the best flyer in all of Equestria.”
Celestia: “I know she is my dear.”
She knows she is? She has the wonderbolts and she will outright say without hesitation that she KNEW RD is the best? That’s pretty suspicious.
And then her tone changed much higher (when complimenting Rainbow Dash’s Sonic Rainboom) as if forgetting she was forgetting she was a princess for a second, or that a princess of her stature shouldn’t be seen as so selective to give compliments like that so casually in public.
Oh and here’s something really juicy…
…y’know how the Sonic Rainboom was heard of but only as just a myth even before it became a rumor that a few kids saw RD perform it herself?
The last time anyone visually witnessed a Sonic Rainboom identically was in the night sky above the old kingdom when Celestia banished Luna using the Elements of Harmony.
Yeah, I kind of wondered why Celestia didn’t investigate the Sonic Rainboom. She may have been busy with Twilight, but that doesn’t excuse her of looking for RD, since she performed something only heard of in myth.
Probably it’s because of two things.
1: The writers cam up with the Sonic Rainboom after the start of the series.
2: It could be possible that Celestia kept an eye on Rainbow, but much more discreetly, since she was busy training Twilight.
I might give that fic a read, but again, I think I’ll wait till I finish my own Alt-fic.
Actually, if you haven’t read it already, would you mind stopping by and taking a look? ‘A Different Sunset’. You don’t have to, but I think your opinion would do wonders for the direction it’s going.
Eh, that fanfic was pretty good. Regardless it really DOES bring up the issue of why Celestia didn’t even find the person responsible for creating a world-shaking Sonic Rainboom that caused Twilight’s magic to activate when both were fillies.
It brings up another question of Rainbow Dash’s power. We know the Element of Magic’s out of control power and how much adult Twilight can currently control of it and how much she can’t….But if Rainbow Dash was strong enough to make a GIANT Sonic Rainboom when she when she was a child, how strong is she really and how much is she holding back that she had to train 10 years to do a normal one?
The set up for Rainbow Dash saying “I did it once when I was little” in Sonic Rainboom foreshadowed the reveal 6 episodes ahead, so it wasn’t written on the fly.

I mean…did Celestia know how significant Rainbow Dash was to the elements?
I don’t know, the release of the elements since Celestia, her Hercules cutie mark, her dislike of becoming a princess…it almost seems like RD’s role is supposed to be inherited. Maybe even genetically.
Eh, I still like Lightning Dust though. (Liked her so much, I made her one of the Elements in my alternate take on the the series beginning. Same thing with Sunset. (Though, I think it’s already obvious I’m her number one fan. :D) Hopefully, I’ll be able to pull it off.)
Talking about RD like this kind of reminds me of that one fic series that has Rainbow become Celestia’s pupil instead of Twilight. I haven’t read it yet though.
Yes, I would kill for an episode equivalent of Celestia’s adventure with Spike, or something similar that allows Celestia to explain her line of thinking and overcome it. That would be the biggest improvement for the series in a LOOOONG time.
Exactly what I was thinking. RD seems to be some kind of chosen one that is outside of Celestia’s limited field of vision. Twilight relies on Rainbow Dash’s common sense and street smarts more times then we can count.
About not liking RD, understandable. I liked her since the beginning, but I guess I’ve always liked anti-heroes/flawed heroes. Heck despite her lousy, untrusting attitude, I still respect Gilda infinitely more then Lightning Dust. Gilda is sincerely loyal and cares about Rainbow Dash, and WAS willing to shake Pinkie’s hand and start fresh, until Pinkie’s painful hand-buzzer and all of RD’s pranks made her lose her temper. Lighting Dust was more ‘friendly’, but in the end she only cared about herself. She couldn’t feel any sympathy for others.
And as for Sunset Shimmer, she was essentially trying to be connected to the elements for the same method of power that Luna and Celestia’s cutie marks were carved into the Tree of Harmony.
From what I could tell, Celestia and Luna were supposed to be the ‘caretakers’ of the elements between the generations of Clover the Clever and Commander Hurricane’s generation, and Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash’s generation.
We need more backstory on Celestia and Luna and the Tree of Harmony to be sure though. We don’t know why their cutie marks were inscribed on the tree.
Sunset thought she could become a superpowerful ‘caretaker’ of the elements by living in the other dimension for 3+ years and grabbing the element of harmony’s power, or whatever power it was prior to the gems and the tree. (the power that defeated the windigo’s and perhaps Tirek)
Apparentely, she found out how to become an omnipowerful alicorn like Celestia in a forbidden history book called ‘History of Equestria: Who was Megan?’
Wow…You know, would it kill the writers to give us an episode with Celestia just hanging out? You know, being a nice pony and all.
Maybe it would curbstomp some of the hate she gets.
As well, I wonder if the show will ever have a finale similar to The Best Night Ever again? You know, with all the mane six having an equal amount of screen time and story. Heck, even Celestia and Spike got some love there and their own little arc.

The answer is pretty simple. Celestia wanted the other 5 to be completely out of the loop so Discord could catch them completley off guard and capture them, and everything would revolve around Twilight’s actions. Prior to the (you guessed it) awesome IDW comic, FF #3, Celestia only saw Twilight’s role as a hero and princess as important, she didn’t give a thought to the other Mane 5 or the citizens, which is why she sets up these situations for her in Crystal Empire and Twilight’s Kingdom. She admits at the end of the issue that she might be mistaken on her concept about people’s roles, but that doesn’t effect the less-thought-out finale.
Look at all the season 3 and 4 premier and finales back to back. Crystal Empire, Magical Mystery Cure, Princess Twilight Sparkle and Twilight’s Kingdom.
All of them are just giant love-letters to Twilight Sparkle, the equivalent of when DC writers want all superheroes to not only see Batman with respect, but take it several steps too far and make the other superheroes seem absolutely pathetic compared to Batman.
You know, the more we talk, the more I can’t help but think Rainbow Dash is some sort of chosen one or something.
She can perform the Sonic Rainboom, something thought only to be done in myths.
She was the catylist of the other Elements getting their marks.
You’ve stated before, Rainbow Dash has pretty much played out of Celestia’s hooves, but was able to make it right.
Wow! She really is something. I’m glad she’s actually become a likable character. (Truth be told, I really didn’t care for her when I got into the fandom. Season 2 made me ambivalent of her and gave her some point, but I by Season 3, I rather liked our rainbow pegasus.)
Read that comic and you have a point. Though, it still is incredibly odd how Sunset seems to have been far more adept at magic (from what I saw in the comic) and a much more logical pony, even going (again I repeat) to meet several ponies who exhibit traits of our lovely mane heroines in the show.
It smells a little fishy to me, but then again, like Celestia, she would be able to wield it, but wouldn’t be it’s true owner. (As once she tried to use it on Twilight, it backfired.)
That’s a nice thoery, but Cutie Mark Chronicles made that theory impossible. The Mane 6 had a bound destiny that activated all their talents, they were all born to be chosen to be the elements since Rainbow Dash created the Sonic Rainboom. Rainbow Dash is not only the Element of Loyalty, she is the only catalyst of the Elements to exist since Celestia lost the connection to them. Twilight is the only one we could call into question of being randomly chosen, as she only has 10% control over the magic in her body shown when she was a child, and magic isn’t a morality.
Twilight’s will was never THAT strong, always relying on Celestia’s word, so that’s never been a surprise to anyone.
Sunset wasn’t a potential Element of Magic…you see as it was revealed in the comic, she was trying to become a Princess Celestia, not a Princess Twilight. She wanted to become an almighty princess that were connected to the elements, the same way Celestia was, but since she was corrupt she became a demon instead.

And yeah, I could see that lesson being brushed aside in Trade Ya! (A really mediocre episode in my mind) but the Equestria Games was a Spike episode. I really don’t think they could have done anything really different and I thought everything was well done in that episode. (Though, I can’t help but feel a bit jipped how we got all that build up for a Spike episode…But then again, this is pretty much the perfect Spike episode, so I don’t complain.)
It’s possible the writers set her aside like that is because (with my earlier reason included) they want her to follow Faust’s original idea and become Celestia’s replacement. (It wouldn’t surprise me, given how the show staff really don’t care for Celestia…like at all.)

No, not just that. I mean Twilight’s charachter made plenty of mistakes and logic fails within the episodes she was at least in, fails the others would of pointed out to her in earlier seasons (examples like Twilight’s fail spell on the parasprites and her ‘standing still idea’ in the time episode)…but the characters ,beside Discord and rarely Rainbow Dash and Spike, would just ignore Twilight’s mistakes. She wasn’t held responsible for anything.
Not to mention she started to not even acknowledge her flaws or being flawed herself within the episodes. It all came across as superficial and holier-then-thou in S4. That whole ‘we are all your students’ crap was something she should not have taken to heart, but she did to some degree.
She acted like both Celestia AND herself knew better then the others most of the time. (shrug) But only a complete idiot would of followed Celestia’s advice and NOT told her 5 friends about her EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS magic upgrade and Discord’s ‘betrayal’. But Twilight’s insecurities, open-mindedness and humbleness that made her unique, useful and lovable in earlier seasons seemed to disappear in S4.
Heck, the unlikable pressure of being a princess that was so well written in IDW #17, was the starting moral in the beginning of Trade Ya!, and even a small part of Equestria Games when she didn’t like being in the princess seats, but they changed the lesson at the end to something completely nonsensical cause they wanted her to accept being something
Also, I believe that the Elements aren’t just bound to one specific pony, like some magical artifacts. While there might only be a few, other ponies, such as Sunset Shimmer, could have been the Element of Magic. (It’s kind of hinted, what with her being able to at least wield the Element and the fact that she met five other ponies similar to the mane six in Canterlot who wished to be her friend.)
Well I’ll chalk that up to Celestia having at least some foresight abilities. (Future visions would explain some things…Maybe I’m just thinking that because her voice actress also played as a farseer…That would make for an interesting fic.)
Good point. I don’t think Twilight had any episodes to herself this season. She was mostly on the sideline, either being viewed or trying to help. Maybe they did it to justify how she was acting in the season 4 finale. (Which makes sense, at least she got better there…Of course, we won’t know until she meets Discord in season 5.)
That is very possible. Although I should note that if Twilight gained friends in Canterlot, her plan to send Twilight to Ponyville to find friends and save Luna would of been FUBARed. She did lie to her about Nightmare Moon and tell her to make friends in a roundabout, reverse-psychology way for them to become elements.
(Although to be fair, it also hinged on Rainbow Dash bringing the other 4 to Twilight’s once Nightmare Moon appeared. Everything RD does seems to be out of Celestia’s hands, from creating the first Sonic Rainboom to nearly killing Celestia when fighting her evil self)
But your right, Twilight is majorly flawed in her way of thinking, but with her magic and former humility and open mindedness, its what makes her no more or less important or flawed then any of the others. Heck its the reason that between Lesson Zero and the beginning of S4(minus the S3 plot episodes), they were all equal characters. Twilight’s studies/life did not take precident over other people’s lives, the other’s lessons and what they learned were just as important.

I think Twilight made herself that way. From what we can tell, Celestia was probably urging Twilight to get out and make some friends all through her studies. {No doubt her family was the same.}
Twilight chose not to and instead, buried herself in her studies.
So, maybe it’s a mental thing she was born with.
Why is it everytime that Twilight makes a conclusion without a good amount of evidence, its not a good guess, but absolutely asinine? Did Celestia (practically) raise her without any common sense or social skills?
Why would the crystal heart hurt something unrelated to her AND she’s corporeal? Evil Celestia isn’t a disembodied demon of a pony, she’s just evil.
Twilight’s. They are going to throw Spike at Celestia and Luna.
