That BP takes criticism much worse than you do. I have to give you some kudos for being professional about my misgivings.

At any rate, no, I can’t think of any OC stories that have really impressed me, but I’m going to find one at some point, confound it. Of course, there have been stories about background ponies that I’ve liked, which is almost the same thing in some ways.

Not the same anon here, but I’m someone who’s been watching this anon make a fool of himself here for most of the while. Gonna toss out two quick predictions for ya.

Either the anon’s going to A) have read OCs that worked for him… by putting them all in ancillary parts, meaning none of them would get the kind of focus Clutter does, or B) he’s going to say “no, but i’m sure there’s one out there somewhere”, as if that backs up any of his points.

He’s whining about OCs getting “too much focus” when half the damned point of a story like this is that the OC gets part of the main spotlight. It’s like complaining about the narrator character in a second-person story, or the Anon in an Anon in Equestria story, or what have you. Just let him down gently so he doesn’t keep making a fuss, man. You’ve got better things to do than to try and entertain his notions.

It’s not just hard, it’s nearly impossible. One of the biggest problems is that the temptation to make one’s OC too important, such as you see in this story, is much too tempting. Even if the author doesn’t consciously think of the character as a self-insert, the tendency is to love your own creation far above the established ensemble, and it almost always shows.

Concerning the OC discussion: I guess most of the OC stigma stems from the fact that doing OC’s well is really fucking hard.

With canon characters, you have an established baseline, you have an understanding of what a character would do, how they talk, how they would react to situations. If you want to have an interesting OC, you have to come up with an interesting personality first, a character in its own right. As someone that writes himself, that is really fucking hard to do well.

Of course, there’s also the self insertions, but I think it’s common understanding that self insertion is pretty much a bad idea in any fic in general, and that’s not what the conversation was about.

I greatly respect anyone that can manage to have shipping between a canon and an OC character and have it done well, simply because it’s hard.
