I live in Oklahoma. Perhaps not the absolute worst place for bullying and small-mindedness, but definitely up there on the list. I have never been bullied in my life, even when I came out in front of my classmates as gay. I’m an antisocial bookworm who played on the computer in the corner of the classroom for basically all of my schooling. All that mattered was that I had confidence in myself. I had the swagger, I was intelligent, and I was prepared.

Confidence can make all the difference in a social situation, even I knew that.
