The premise is sound, but it’d take some really creative writing to get this right.  
It sounds like a good idea for a story for fimfiction if someone could write better than I can. (Not difficult).
 
That story of mine over on fimfiction hasn’t done well at all. I’m trying not to give up on the story. I don’t think any readers there have figured out yet that the story isn’t going to end with the ponies getting the staff.  
In fact, the staff has a nasty surprise in store for our ponies when the princess tries to use it’s power….

Oh yes. Personally, I think a Bloodthirster (a much more toned down one, mind you) would actually make an excellent MLP style villain. Like you said, powerful and immune to magic without relying on magic. Watching the Mane 6 having to struggle to find new and creative ways of dealing with the threat would be pretty dang awesome, especially considering this would really be the first time that the princesses, Discord, the Elements/Rainbow Powers, etc. would be useless. It would be all about having to outwit the foe and TRULY rely on the bonds brought about by friendship as opposed to the ACTUAL magic.

A powerful opponent that’s completely immune to the effects of magic, and yet doesn’t have any magical powers themselves?  
Pity we can’t throw ideas like this in the direction of the show producers.  
I know popular ideas from the fans are often picked up by the producers. (More than one of the VAs lurks the /mlp/ board over on 4chan. They do it anonymously but it’s pretty obvious they’re there. No doubt the show writers also lurk the biggest fan sites for feedback and ideas).

Khorne would actually be pissed the hell off because of Tirek’s usage of magic. Khorne respects only melee combat.
