Only weebly internet tough guys declare victory on comment threads, bro.
Looks like I won ^^
Ooh, witty.
Yes an yes
@the metal bronyhead
No. And no.
true. That may have been true at a time but I seen way more people critical of Twi than loving her. Twilight used to be my fav out of the mane 6. idk now.
Protagonists can be overrated: Mario.
To clarify, I love both. X3
(Princess) Twilight Sparkle, even being blessed with wings (drama ends with me), well, she’s the core of the M6, not much to say.
Rainbow Dash, should have fulfilled her life-long dream (writing team be screwed).
Fluttershy, not much consistent character development (status quo be thrown away for good).
Octavia, even having a one-liner in Rainbow Rocks, only relevant as fanservice.
DJ Pon-3, aside from her role as the unofficial 8th Ranger in Rainbow Rocks, still only relevant as fanservice.
Princess Luna, still less useful in canon than her big sis and her niece.
Lyra H., her desire for human hands is meaningless anyway.
Derpy/Dahpie/whatever, Derpygate is all over.
Coco Pommel, not much to say for a minor character.
Sonata Dusk, eat steam-cooked dumplings for a change, will ya?
That OC named Snowdrop, sorry but she can’t go to the Equator.
Future updates, if I have a dA account:
Cheese Sandwich, fanservice and wish fulfillment made manifest, enough said.
(Equalized) Party Favo(u)r, because of that intelligence-degrading ‘But I didn’t listen’ meme, may have the favo(u)r turned against him.
Double Diamond, making him effeminate is intelligence-degrading.
Tree Hugger, same deal as Coco Pommel.
With both genres of art, a single word can mean anything. Using an English word can be a commentary on WASPs, or White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Overrated can be one of those word puzzles from MAD Magazine: These ponies are “Over” the possibility of being “Rated”.
Note it’s undeniable that all artist’s are varying degrees of loopy. Otherwise, they’d be Quakers. A world without art would be a world without change, where the weak are oppressed and the strong steal and kill as they please.
Reinterpretations, like those in a description on DA, or those spoken out the mouth of a guy with a top hat and monocle, are as much a part of art as the piece itself.
And as I pointed out SEVERAL TIMES already, I do not care what the artist says or feels about these characters. The image itself is the only thing I have any comment on in this case. Not sure why you insist on making this about the artist.
@thps48
Just how many ways are there to interpret “overrated”? How would you define it?
There’s no “excuses,” and you don’t have to “read the artist’s mind.” As I pointed out SEVERAL TIMES already, in the source link the artist even says this image isn’t meant to be “taken seriously,” and that they ARE a fan of these characters pictured here.
So to keep “analyizing” the image, or jumping to conclusions about the artist is pointless overall.
If you find the image “annoying,” then just hit the “back” button, and forget about it’s existence.
Unaffiliated art that sells for nowhere near two hundred bucks made by professionals has multiple meanings. Why can’t this piece?
We aren’t mind readers. We can only judge what the artist actually makes, not how he or she feels. If it looks insulting, that’s just an image the artist is going to have to deal with; all the excuses in the world aren’t going to change how it looks. Some people are going to like it because it agrees with their prejudices that these characters ARE overrated. Others are going to think it’s harmless ribbing like you do, and others are going to be annoyed by it, as I am. You can’t make everyone take the middle road, regardless of what the artist says.
It’s fine if you disagree with it, that’s your opinion. I just don’t think it’s fair of others to assume it’s somehow “insulting” the characters, or being passive-aggressive. It seems like an overall harmless pic to me. I’ve seen worse/edgier humor fanart pics.
@thps48
Somebody understands! :)
I am assuming nothing about the artist, nor am I reading too much into anything. We could argue about the artist’s true fee-fees until doomsday, but the picture still has the word “overrated” in it, and that is what I disagree with.
Almost said Dragon Ball/Z/GT/Kai/etc., but that’s too obvious, and I love Dragon Quest too much to discredit Toriyama. :j
Not to me, it just comes off as a slightly playful joke to me about the characters’ popularity.
The pic doesn’t even seem to be really “insulting” the characters, and they’re drawn quite cute regardless. I think you’re reading to much into it. (Also, they’re fictional characters…)
Heck, I make fun of characters I love in my fanart ALL the time, so I know how it is with humorous art. It’d be like assuming an artist hates Pinkie Pie, just ’cause they drew something comical about her, or something.
And that’s exactly how it comes across for most people when they see the word used, whatever ideas the artist may “really” claim to hold.
Even if the artist likes these characters, calling them overrated still means “Thing is liked more than (it should be/is appropriate/I’d prefer/is justified/whatever other thing I like better).”
That’s not the intent of the artist though, they even tried to make that clear in the source link pointing out they personally DO like these characters. So it’s not a subtle “hate-pic,” “take-that,” or anything.
“Overrrated” for me means “this gets too much popularity and nobody should like it”. People often use this word as an insult. Insulting is not a joke.
I suppose the ambiguity is hidden underneath this image, and not everypony is able to notice it, right? That would be correct, and I’m not saying there’s no way at least one individual would be in that boat. :j
