The final fight looked a lot like Gohan vs Cell, too.  
And the super-powered ponies (don’t remember the name, nor I want to) had a Super Saiyan flair.
 
Many people stated back then that that couple of episodes were a tribute to DBZ. And turned out to be quite good at that.

There were just too many things in this episode that made it look like it was in fact a reference to dbz.
 
~~These “pony orbs” -> Dragon Balls  
-The mountain where Twilight teleported to before fighting Tirek, it looked a lot like the mountain where Bulma stayed in Namek  
-The dark and red-ish ambient of the fight is like Namek  
-Tirek’s energy-drain ability -> Cell (not exactly like that, but similar)  
-Energy (or magic) beams all over the place

Eh, he’s only got four of ’em, we got this.

Here they are all sitting a bunch, doo doo doo  
One star, two star, all as big as my head!  
Give them a toss, a planet across, that’s how Tirek wins, bye bye!
