I know all of the main characters are very complex. I could spend pages listing about each of their most complex traits…some already addressed in the show, many not.
Just for example, there’s Fluttershy. She has some fear issues, some more specific attention (stage fright) issues, and repressed anger issues. All these have been somewhat addressed in the show. However one underlying thing they haven’t addressed is something I could call ‘Frankenstein’s monster’ syndrome, in that she is often falls under the delusion that the world outside of her comfort zone is a ‘cruel, cruel world’, and she sometimes impresses that delusion on herself and even the creatures she’s taking care for….even if it makes no sense, like when Twilight pointed out the Breezies were simply going home.
The reason I singled RD out is not only is she the most consistantly outgoing with her complex opinions and leadership skills, (while in extremely varied situations, the other 4 tend to stay a little more neutral somewhat more frequently)…but many of RD’s personality traits most resemble that of a central protagonist in a story setting. But they have taken such a weird path for Twilight’s character growth(or lack-their-of sometimes) for the longest time. And for some reason, they left those flaws out in the out in the open but unchallenged until Twilight finally had to confront them in Rainbow Rocks.
As for the rest of your complaint, there is simply no way to respond to your ‘because of the writers’ argument. Its inane. The writers are the reason their characters exist in the first place. While I agree that they could of gone in a different direction for Twilight and RD, they didn’t, and you claiming your ‘headcanon’ Twilight is the undebatable main character doesn’t mean anything to us.
Each of these characters is complex if you put enough time to think about it. The problem with Twilight is not her personality but with writers who make so many plot/logic mistakes

And yes. Twilight is the main character because Hasbro decided like that. She’s not saving the Equestria alone but still does it, standing on her friends shoulders

She is a very complex character. The ‘arrogant douchy jock’ persona is simply her outermost early layer, and the amount of heart, leadership and charisma she is capable of is staggering.
Its no surprise. I could write for ages and still forget many facets about her character. Other characters like Rarity have a lot of complexities too, but hers seem more linked to her growth into adult life. RD’s are very intense, and I wish we knew more about her.

Cyclops.
I think that says it all really. Characters that are leaders but have a major stick up their ass are the least worthy of having major show attention. The 90s X-men show was smart and kept Scott mostly at an arms length, mostly for a foil for Wolverine. Rainbow Dash is the Wolverine to Twilight’s Cyclops. I’m not saying that good stories can’t come from Cyclops as a leader, they can, but he has the least interesting personality so it is often hard.
Thing is, Hasbro doesn’t give a damn. They just want to sell their toys. As a result, plots will center around Twilight without any common sense. (At least in Canterlot Wedding, she was personally involved because her brother was the groom; and she eventually fought side by side with her friends against a batallion of changelings.)
Plus, it doesn’t help that they have set up Dash as the auxillary Main Character for a long time.
-1) Rainbow Dash is revealed to have been responsible for them all getting their cutie marks connecting them to the elements of harmony.
-2)Rainbow Dash’s trials against Nightmare Moon and Discord were more personal and more severe then the others
-3)She has gone through some of the most dynamic character development episodes, to the point where she is giving huge from-the-heart speaches that change other’s minds instead of princess Twilight. She has even developed the bonds of an adoptive big sister/big bro bond with Scoots.
-4)In terms of being rewarded for effort and leadership, her life is in direct contrast to Twilight’s life almost as much as Trixie, yet they both are relatively new permanent residents of Ponyville. Twilight could risk a city until the last second and still be praised
-5)The first few minutes of Season 5 is Dash going over what happened in the last episode like a smart leader, but before they come to the part where Twilight agreed to keep them in the dark and endanger them, they are interrupted when the Viewing Globe appears in the Command Center(lol). It really seems that Twilight has overstayed her welcome as “leader”, but Hasbro wants to ignore that as much as possible.
Rewatching the MLP episodes, it amazes me how many times Rainbow Dash has taken over the group as leader or Twilight was setup as a leader but her flaws in many of her plans are pointed out as stupid (like standing-still-Twilight), or even argued against Celestia herself on some of her ‘tests’ for Twilight.

Another big thing is that Twilight in the show simply has way too many unaddressed morality holes. The way she treats Spike half the time, her cultistic attitude towards Celestia…and it doesn’t help that Rainbow Dash has a unique connection to all 6 of her friends while Twilight barely has 3. Applejack, Rarity and Fluttershy have never really become ‘besties’ with Twilight even after 4 seasons.
Anyone who honestly thinks that Twilight ISN’T THE central character of the show and the core of the mane six (Their De Facto leader since the first episode) is seriously delusional. This does not necessarily make her overpowered to the point where she can solve everyone’s problems on her own, or that she doesn’t need her friends to be there for her and help her out along her journey, or even come close to ruling an entire nation… yet.
Then yeah.
(sigh) Another ‘Twilight is the main character, so shut up!!’ troll.
YES! MAIN CHARACTER! She has been central to the plot ever since literally the very first second she appears onscreen; Y’know? As the very first pony character we are introduced too (not counting Celestia’ and Luna’s little prologue of course), If you have such a problem with the main godd@mn character having special privileges and prestige (and extra special consideration from the writers) THAN JUST SAY SO!

For ONCE, couldn’t they have said kept the focus away from Equestria Twilight? The story already had RD as band leader, and Sunset, the formal protege of Celestia, and her redemption story. The human 5 seem to act far more natural when Princess Twilight isn’t around, when they mostly act like sheep towards. And, again, Twilight can’t participate in a school competition cause she isn’t a student.
(sigh) She just had a dbz action sequence all by herself, her ego does NOT need more bolstering and her character does NOT need more attention.
…allright, try to stay positive…maybe this is a good thing? Maybe they will keep the focus away from Twilight, and Sunset and Twilight will have time to talk about personal experiance’s with Celestia, and Sunset warns Twilight to become more humble and not make the same mistake she did…? I mean considering their mentors, Sunset is in some ways Twilight’s older sister/senior.
I wish I could say that good writing is assured considering the parts before Twilight seem pretty good, but we’ve seen big downward writing slopes in MLP before due to Twilight or Celestia’s orders to Twilight.

I was kinda wondering… Or at least wondering if this is setup for Sunset to show up in the show for a few episodes next season.
It really seems like the movie will setup the ability for portal travel at Twilight’s whim.
