Well it was more that her Magical-Energy-Meter developed a mind of it’s own. She didn’t meant any harm, and it wasn’t even really for selfish reasons, just curiosity. An antagonist means that he is an anti-protagonist and that he works against the protagonists. And the true antagonist was the principal, who had Twilight in her fangs.  
I even had the feeling that Human Twilight was kinda the protagonist of the movie. Since she was the only character who had any character development and an ark in the movie. She just started on the wrong team and got corupted at the end. In her monster form, yes then she was the super-villain kind of character with plans to conquer a world, even if it means destroying another.

She was basically the antagonist, since her desire for knowledge tempered by Cinch’s pride caused 100% of the movie problems.
 
I consider that basically the same thing as the villain

But she turned into a monster at the end, so I guess I was kinda right?

I got the idea that this Twilight took the crown because she blames Sunset for failing, in her eyes, her duty to protect Equestria after all the past villain incidents in the series and thinking she’d be a better element bearer than her.

Goddamn it! Cannot believe this didn’t cross my mind: Sunset is Riku, Twilight is Sora. Sunset chose the dark side of the force, so The Spark was given to Twilight instead. :D
