The Microsoft Services EULA
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement/
Section 7b
“Updates to the Services or Software, and Changes to These Terms”
“We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices.”
For the other part about the documents blocking and scanning it’s just what I discuss and sharing with IT colleagues.
But it already exist for money

>>Windows tries to push secure boot to make only their OS compatible with most hardware.
>Haven’t we already discussed this?
Listen I repair lot’s of pc and the new generation doesn’t make some peripheral work because of UEFI restriction, for example I have a HP laptop mini-PCIe slot who work perfectly under windows but when I migrate over another os it doesn’t work, even with wifi cards that I know they work that heir are 100% compatible, they can’t stop people from installing another os, ok… so just make it so impractical so that they won’t change the os, that’s how they did, going around the law again.
>Source please. Any clear indication that the NSA has a foothold in Windows OS is something that would not be under-reported.

Agree I was talking about nsa
take a look again
>>Microsoft still has security problems because of two things, first the nsa that asks to put backdoor in everything pieces of software and hardware in existence
I just added reference to libreboot since it seems quite important too me that people should be informed that the NSA went way to far just to stop the generic boogie man that they always show when they answer lambda users.
>These are modules designed for Intel
and AMD
This is quite difficult to explain…
What I am trying to say is that windows still as compatibility from the beginning, sure it’s quite nice when you think of it.
But when you make software, having this much of old code that isn’t maintained correctly,
(that isn’t touched at all for reasons like at the orly airport who uses such old software for the weather that the company who did it disappeared with the source code and they have to obligatory use a windows os) to maintain is suicidal when you want a stable and secure system to maintain.
It bloats the system it gives more vector of attacks it gives unexplained errors and bugs that you won’t correct normally but instead you’ll make a shitty patch instead of fixing the problem.
>Define “finished”. I don’t think any sane OS dev thinks they will ever ship a “final” version of an OS that will never need bug patches/updates.
>Define “finished”
When the objectives, the goals that were meant to be are successful.
From the people that I trust I know that the technical objectives weren’t met.
But they were from the marketing for windows 7.
Like you said a software isn’t never really finished.
Some devs are dead, some devs quited, part of codes where lost partially because of these reasons.
Shit happens unfortunately, but the thing is that we don’t know until someone massively leaks data about it.
>This is always how bug fixing works.
True but Not exactly
Let me explain myself
>>they only correct when someone founds a bug, they don’t do audits
The people who correct the bugs are generally not the official devs.
Because when you make software except if you are in a hurry (witch should not be the case with Microsoft since it’s the richest company in the world) you should check your work or someone near you.
When you’ve added a feature or update you make regression testing (and more), but they only correct if it’s blatant if it disturbs alot.
But from what I received from the Microsoft High Tech Camp at Redmond most of this is skipped to be looked by some students.
I complain but some students learn something at least.
This is just a “I heard from”.

Definition of conspiracy theory from wikipedia
A conspiracy theory is an explanatory or speculative hypothesis suggesting that two or more persons, or an organization, have conspired to cause or cover up, through secret planning and deliberate action, an event or situation typically regarded as illegal or harmful.
Was the prism project a secret project ?
Yes
Was it made by more than one person ?
Yes (most of big countries and companies still participates)
Where their any deliberate action ?
Yes
Please elaborate:
Nsa and other participant are to monitor data and copy/send everything that goes through communication system.
Was the project illegal ?
Yes
Why ?
It is a violation of the First and Fourth Amendments of the Constitution (US constitution)
Was it used in another bad way ?
yes (also on allies)
Who ?
for example the French government (presidents and more)
https://wikileaks.org/nsa-france/
Why ?
Multiple reasons (economical, political and more)
is it a theory that the NSA spies and uses everything, everyone they can, to do so ?
No
So is it a conspiracy ?
I think that yes it is a conspiracy and not a theory
it’s so simple to saying that people are paranoid tinfoil nutjobs
please reconsider in the future :) the world isn’t bright it is up to us to make it brighter.
@Exedrus
Yes I dislike Microsoft for multiple reasons obliviously
because they take away freedom from people
the freedom to do whatever they want to do with their computer.
Plus the spying (but did they have a choice ? even google does it where they forced to do so ?)
I don’t know but looking what the surveillance program does to their allies it won’t surprise me.
But it’s not just Microsoft, Microsoft is just another company with really bad morale.
What I dislike is software that restrains the users freedom.
I think it’s more that he just really dislikes Microsoft.
At this rate, I’m getting the feeling he’s a conspiracy theorist…

You mean the ones on the lock screen (“Windows Spotlight”)? Although I do agree this is hilarious stupidity on MS’s part, it’s not really that scary since they can be disabled.
>The os scans for non-authorized copyrighted content for example crack for video games and for what I hear copyright in documents is being studied (basically scanning for copyright infringement and deleting documents)
Your source is a theoretical printer imagined by a different company (IBM). Please give me a source that actually backs up what you’re stating.

This hasn’t been relevant since 1999.

>Microsoft still has security problems because of two things, first the nsa that asks to put backdoor in everything pieces of software and hardware in existence
Source please. Any clear indication that the NSA has a foothold in Windows OS is something that would not be under-reported.
>for hardware evidence look at these links:
These have nothing to do with Microsoft. These are modules designed for Intel which, from the looks of it, can be disabled. That you can’t easily swap out your motherboard’s firmware (or even part of it) for some random generic implementation you found on the internet is in no way surprising.
>They focus on features instead of trying to stabilize their already existing piece of code.
They literally release security and stability patches every week.
>…that’s why you can upgrade from MS-Dos to windows 10.
And this is a bad thing? Who on earth is going to want to upgrade through ~35 years worth of ancient OSs?
>vista isn’t actually finished neither windows 7,8 and 10 they abandoned everything because it was to much work,
Define “finished”. I don’t think any sane OS dev thinks they will ever ship a “final” version of an OS that will never need bug patches/updates.
>Developers don’t know how it works (it is unfortunate that I can’t give you the logs) but they don’t really know how it works they just ad features over features, … they don’t do audits.
Source please. These statements are absolutely outrageous. I really doubt they are true.
>they only correct when someone founds a bug
This is always how bug fixing works.
Edited because: deleting because cloudfalre is missing with me and it makes double posts
Does it still work nowadays ?
But still you shouldn’t have to do this kind of thing.
I had a hellish experience with skype in companies, this software is one of the biggest security holes that I had (server firewall experience) in the end we rented a server for 7$ a month and installed jitsi on it.
@Eeveeinheat
They aren’t intrusive (for skype) in the way that they don’t disturb your day to day use of computers that is true.
But please understand that there is more to a computer to what you can just see with your eyes.
At the beginning of the internet adds were very simple just add this image and that was all (a bit simplified)
Now, adds are bots, who tries to retrieve information about you from anything in your browser and then will communicate with other servers to have more informations via correlation of what it as already gained on you and make a fingerprint of your habits so it can target what is best thing add it can give to you.
This must seem paranoid to people who don’t have the habit to work in it but it goes further than that because all this private data that is yours doesn’t use secure protocols (https for exmaple) and other entities (some are add companies others are more mallveilant) can sniff the data that these bots gather from you and use it.
It can go pretty far for example the case of the facebook teen girl who was pregnant and adds hinted her father and he discovered that she was indeed pregnant.
Honestly I prefer to give 1$ or 2$ per month (multiply this by the umber of people on the site) than to be tracked.
If you want more know more on that look here
https://panopticlick.eff.org/?action=log&js=yes
and here
https://www.browserleaks.com/
@Background Pony #9904
Windows 7 ok why not but XP is just asking to be beaten to death by some bot.
I don’t think that there is a good reason to stay on a microsoft platform now.
Libre software works and their are replacements for everything, even for games.
Microsoft still has security problems because of two things, first the nsa that asks to put backdoor in everything pieces of software and hardware in existence
(for hardware evidence look at these links:
https://libreboot.org/faq/#intel
https://libreboot.org/faq/#amdpsp
)
and for the second one
is simply because microsoft windows development is chaotic.
Why ?
Well lots of accumulated reasons
-They want to do their way while the server world goes another (logical and secure) way.
-They focus on features instead of trying to stabilize their already existing piece of code.
-They have compatibility with software from 20 + years who isn’t under development anymore, that’s why you can upgrade from MS-Dos to windows 10.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj6R2L9Z_o4
This just reveals the horrible system that it is (technically) because having this much dependencies is just horrifying, even in the gnu movement we don’t have that (anymore), if they wanted to change this it would take decades because of this and they tried with vista and it took six year to have the turd that is vista, vista isn’t actually finished neither windows 7,8 and 10 they abandoned everything because it was to much work, because they lost lots of information and people over the years.
-Developers don’t know how it works (it is unfortunate that I can’t give you the logs) but they don’t really know how it works they just ad features over features, they only correct when someone founds a bug, they don’t do audits.
That’s why they are turning over free/libre software for their server cloud solution, because they know that they can’t with the actual windows.
Another good reason to stick to Windows 7 or XP
Skype is an otherwise free service, so, of course, they have ads. They aren’t that intrusive, really.
Just want to point out, that you actually can remove ads on Skype. I found out a couple years ago, and it was sooo nice.
You have to go open Internet Explorer (yes, even if you don’t use it. Skype uses a connection to the web via IE even when it’s not open to gain access to its ad service. Once open, go to internet options, then click the ‘Security’ tab. Then click ‘Restricted Sites’, then hit the ‘Sites’ button. Add the following link to there:
https://apps.skype.com
After that’s done, restart Skype and it should show nothing where there once was ads.
Edited because: Added one extra step
Indeed they will change again but has updates
the goal of Microsoft on the long term is just to rent you a cloud solution like adobe with their creative cloud suite.
This system is very beneficial for them.
Because you loose complete control of your computer and windows 10 is the beginning of that.
How can you loose the control of it ?
Well for example of a software that I don’t have control of it, is for example skype.
Can you remove the adds ?
no
Can you add encryption on it ?
No
Can you connect to another service (jitsi for example) instead of skype but still using the skype interface ?
No
You cannot do more that what the owner of the software authorize you to do.
On windows 10 you don’t have the control of updates (expect for companies who usually haves the ““pro”” version (witch just activates a dozen of dlls).
Adds are already integrated in it.
The os scans for non-authorized copyrighted content for example crack for video games and for what I hear copyright in documents is being studied (basically scanning for copyright infringement and deleting documents) teachers will have problem with this.
(you can thanks telemetry for this)
here’s an example with printers
https://torrentfreak.com/ibm-patents-printer-that-doesnt-copy-infringing-content-160515/
You have less soupless since the license on laptop and pre-assembled desktop computer are integrated in the hardware.
Windows tries to push secure boot to make only their OS compatible with most hardware.
http://techrights.org/wiki/index.php/UEFI
And more things like backdoors (proved since 1999)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSAKEY
And so on
It is dreadful to know that when Watergate was exposed, everyone was shocked enough that it made a president resign, while in our time a planetary surveillance system was revealed and no president or officials aren’t punished for this treason of democracy.
I honestly don’t think they’ll ever stop changing Operating Systems. It will probably be Windows 35 in 20 years or so (they seem to have a habit of skipping numbers every so often)
That’s what they are doing now, actually. I just hope they don’t change they mind once we get used to Windows ten….
It’s really annoying how they’re trying to force people to change operating systems again. Why not just make one OS that people really like (e.g. Win7) and just keep upgrading it over time for any bug fixes that need to be applied. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.
More like upgrade to Vista amirite?
programs see the “9” and think it’s windows 95 or 98…aka huge compatibility problems would ensue (or possibly something worse)
Oh, wait, never mind, that’s right. I pulled that other thing from an old source.
I’ll just stop before I look too dumb.
Your source is correct but the question is why some of them are doing this ?
I think it’s because the company doesn’t want to support other os model it gives them less problems to deal with, for example a hp g6-2307 model doesn’t have any windows 7 drivers supported you have to search elsewhere and it’s not guaranteed that it’s going to work.
In the end it’s all about the same thing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoYWdHe4tQ4
@A Sad Pony
But Microsoft has stated that in order to be “certified for Windows 8”, any x86 PCs “must allow the user to completely disable Secure Boot.” (Source) If OEMs decide to not include it in lieu of this, then, well, that’s not really Microsoft’s fault… (Though it is fairly horrifying O_o.)
