Hell, better yet, have Tirek or something show up after a few stories of this, and have Apple Bloom - who by this point has her morals and priorities all fucked up - agree to sell out or murder the other members of the Mane Seven to keep Applejack safe. Basically, turn her into Jesus Christ Superstar’s version of Judas.

Why in the blue balls of hell would they even THINK about doing this after Rainbow Rocks?! The Mane Six and Sunset were as close as Twilight was to the Mane Six in her world! Applebloom and the Crusaders explicitly liked Sunset! SHE SAVED THE SCHOOL!!!

Seriously, she wasn’t just angry at Sunset, she was angry at all of Applejack’s friends, and said as much. She was going to do the exact same thing to Fluttershy, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and Twilight Sparkle. Six lives she was prepared to ruin because apparently she went all Yuno Gasai for Applejack.
 
…come to think of it, the comic didn’t exactly go out of its way to explain WHY she felt this sudden twinge of guilt at the end after all her actions and thoughts, did she? …unless she felt bad for shaming Applejack and THAT was what she regretted.

Sunset Shimmer’s transition from villian to woobie was certainly quick and efficient.

She goes over to tell AJ about the culprit, but suddenly Apple Bloom comes and reveals that the CMC did it out of jealously. Had FIM!CMC or even Twilight did anon-a-miss, even out of jealousy, they would have been yelled at and left for dead, but appearently, despite intentionally making Sunset look bad, they instantly forgive them.
