you can pay them but if it’s for an issue, it’ll take a while. covers, they can do easily without any delays…i think
I couldn’t even imagine those 2 guys drawing for MLP personally. :P
@Beau Skunky
can you imagine someone making a comparison of tony’s EG art with art from either joe madureira’s battle chasers or j. scott campbell’s danger girl?
It’s true. Even if I can’t say I like Fleecs’s art, it’s insanely unfair to compare someone who needs to draw many images within a short timeframe to someone who can freely choose to work on a work for any amount of time.
Essentially, one can complain about artwork, certainly, but at least keep your complaint relevant.
@The Twelfth Doctor Whoof
I actually agree, plus honestly I’m getting burnt-out on all the Tony-hate. (And the comic-hate in general…) Tony’s not the best artist as I said before, but he’s not the worst either.
The comparison is also further unfair, because as I said the fanart is pony art, and the Tony art is EqG. (And Tony’s pony art is actually better then his EqG art.) So it does seem like a rather deliberate attempt to get more people to bash Tony by showing his “lesser” panels, as opposed to his better ones.
Also, that “Optimus Prime with Pinkie” pic I posted in one of my previous comments does show he is capable of making some epic art sometimes.
The OP has a hate-on against Tony Fleecs, and is using the comparison to allege that a “random fanartist” (actually Ruhisu) improved incredibly in the span of a year while Tony, a professional, did not.
Problem is that the comparison is unfair. Ruhisu - whose work I like quite a lot - draws single panel pics without deadline, meaning he can take all the time he likes to get everything right. Tony is drawing 48 pages (I counted!) of sequential art, plus at least two different covers (and he colours those himself), all of which must get done within a pretty short timeframe. Oh, and Tony is just an artist - he has to draw whatever the writer (here, Ted Anderson) tells him to. Then everything has to go through Bobby Curnow (the editor), and probably even a suit at Hasbro for approval.
Also, as demonstrated before, Tony’s MLP work actually has improved a fair amount over the last two years. He still has his bouts of laziness, mostly with little details (like Page 8 of this issue). But I’ve decided that the majority of the complaints against him now are baseless.
I’d like to see the randomization algorithm used to choose the specific artist for this comparison.
True, considering they have deadlines to meet, and such. Plus on most comic books artists only do the pencil art, while somebody else does the inking and/or coloring. (Not sure if that’s the case with Tony though.)
I remember J. Axer (who used to do art for the Sonic comic) didn’t like how the inker & colorists did his artwork sometimes, or changed some things.
He can probably take more time on the covers than he can on the interior art.
& fanart vs. official art debates should also take artist output into account.
Ugh, I hate it when I double post… How did that happen?
He’s a good/cool artist, but it’s kinda ironic that people in this thread are being so hard on Ted’s work, (calling Rarity “man-face,” and such) yet are fine with the “insert-OC X canon character” shipping in the fanartist’s pic.
(Not that I have issue with that, or the fanartist, but fans usually complain about that kinda thing, so it feels kinda biased torwards Tony.)
Also, as I said already, I don’t think it’s a fair comparison, as one is pony, and one is EqG/human.
Tony’s pony art is much better then his EqG art IMO. Plus, see that “Pinkie & Optimus Prime” image I posted below? That’s Tony’s work, (a comic cover BTW) so he is capable of doing some epic art. I will admit his cover art is usually better then his interior art though.
Overall, I get kinda tired of the “canon/official works VS fanart/fanfic works” debates. I respect both fan-works, and official-works personally.

@OptimusPrimevil
As a kid I used to trace images (like Nintendo art, old comics, and such) which actually is what helped me learn to draw. I don’t do it anymore though. So I’m not against “tracing” if it’s just for learning, and such.
But to see a professional who can already draw doing that, is a bit odd.
like so
a good example of an artist that copies stuff would be greg land (the joke is fans should send him more porn to ‘trace’ off and present it as his ‘work’). the sad thing is when he was still new, he had the talent, now he’s just lazy.
Best thing is that the creators have a VERY good relationship with the fans. Heck, the guy who’s doing the scanlations(and motion comics) had this reaction to one of the artists from the book(in fact the one behind the good picture in my comparison) paying him a major compliment on his video:
Oh, that actually looks cool. :)
Plus Donald rules.
PKNA is Paperinik(also known as Duck Avenger over in the states) New Adventures, an italian comic that was given out between 1997-2000 and essentially took Donald Duck’s secret identitiy and put him in a Marvel-like story(but still with the Donald duck charm). It’s really popular with particular enthusiasts, and a new sequel series is currently being made(PKNE- Paperinik New Era)!
Cover for one of the issues:
Eh, I don’t actually find that shortcut that offensive. Maybe a little distracting (though I can’t really see much of the images on the phone in the top picture) due to style differences, but that’s it really.
I thought you were accusing him of tracing secretly.
Considering how tiny the “copy & paste” images (of official art) were, (being featured on tiny celphones) it’s not that big a deal to me. Now if he was tracing official art, or copying it 100%, I’d agree.
Though, I guess it does clash with his drawing style a li’l. It’d be better if he took a panel from one of his older issues, and used it instead as the cellphone wallpaper, or something.
@RWB
Reminds me of how Archie Comics’s old TMNT Adventures & Sonic comics used to fluctuate between really good artists, and really bad/mediocre ones, or from different drawing styles from anime, to semi-realistic, to cartoony.
(Though, sometimes I kinda like seeing different art styles in comic books.)
PS: what’s “PKNA?”
I didn’t say it was ok when fan artists do it, now did I?
But Tony’s job is a comic book “artist.” That is what he gets payed for. To create art.
