The faintest brush of feathers against her under belly alerted Celestia to the creature beneath her, and with a start she looked down to find twilight’s head poking out from between her front legs.
Twilight was nuzzling her horn and head into the taller alicorn’s chest fur, her eyes shut as she moved. Celestia, unsure of why such attention was being given lifted a leg cautiously. It was well known that her and twilight would hug and nuzzle occasionally…but the mare had never really pushed for physical contact like this.
thinking her student wanted a hug Celestia tried to wrap her hoff around the young mare’s neck,
Twilight’s leg lifted and quickly hooked around her old teacher’s hoof, stopping the action from moving further. her eyes barely opened and she looked up at the Sun, in all it’s glory. her wings opened and slowly wrapped themselves around the princess’ large white forelegs, whilst her back rubbed back and forth on the princess’ belly in a subtle but obvious attempt to cause friction.
“mmm….You’ve eclipsed me…Celestia..” Spoken from her lips, those words came out in the most sultry voice that Celestia had ever heard part from her student’s mouth. It all suddenly clicked.
The gentle nuzzling.

Celestia felt her wings suddenly snap open as realization dawned on her…Twilight was in heat.
She gulped and looked down as her former student hummed and brushed against her chest once more.
“..O-oh my…”

Some humans, particularly women for a certain reason, have ‘swings’ in their sex-drives.
That’s really what the most ‘important’ part of ‘heat’ is; Increased sex-drive, sometimes increasing from near-zero if they have specific mating seasons.
I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve considered the problem in the past, and I don’t think there’s a big difference between Twilight going into Heat, and a real woman with an unusually strong sensitivity to the ‘increased sex drive’ part of their ‘cycle’, so to speak.
It is still a very easy way to get ‘lazy’ and skip the ‘boring’ early stages of a relationship when you want to write porn or near-porn.
But, yes, it does imply it’s partly based on physical attraction rather than an interest in them as a person.
Kinda like when someone chooses a hot girl over a less hot one.
Or, for that matter, like when a straight male chooses a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend, because he’s only sexually interested in the girl, even when the boy might have been a better fit otherwise.
Point is; Sexual relationships will always be partly physical, it’s how those instincts work.
Hmph, if you want to be really reductive and cynical about it. As for robots…I’m sure a sufficiently advance AI could feel emotions like affection.
Aren’t attraction and affection just biological compulsions? Isn’t that the real reason robots can never feel love?

Most authors (or artists) tend to have a ponies heat focus on a single target, mainly the object of said ponies affections. However, not all authors do this, and instead opt of the more realistic version where the pony wants to rut anypony in sight.
I myself personally like it when authors use heat as a recurring element in their stories, for it ads a depth of realism to the world.
