Perhaps because this reminds us that all we know will one day turn to dust? Much like the sand inside the hourglass, all we know and look upon will be ground into powder by the ravages of time. That’s something I think upon now and then and feel sad, but look to what is left below in the hourglass,

That looks awesome. I love the shading and details here, and the scene inside of the hourglass does make me curious as to what it entails. :)
