Sorry if I came off as being kind of a jerk with the answer posted before this. But I don’t see that much of a similarity between the MLP figurine you posted and the sleeping pony above.
Though the idea that the artists were using earlier-gen ponies as models for the ones appearing in the story sounds good.
And?
The mare up above has a three-gem cutie mark, she’s a unicorn, and she has a styled mane and tail reminiscent of Rarity’s, as well as a similar coat and mane/tail color. She could be intended as one of Rarity’s ancestors?

Eh, maybe. I’ve got to remember to wait and see just what explanations we get in-story first.
It kinda makes sense that Luna wasn’t the protector of dreams before her banishment, otherwise she wouldn’t have felt unappreciated by ponies sleeping through her night.
And showing Nightmare Moon how to enter dreams? Huh, I thought that as Luna she already knew how to do that; and this sounds like a recipe for disaster here.
