Also there’s a slight…very slight chance of Sprity being cannon…if there go the fairy tale route like in Shining Armor and Cadance case.
I support this, basically because a Sweetie Belle -> Spike -> Rarity “romantic triangle” would be the silliest and funniest thing ever. We’d have Sweetie Belle being insanely jealous of her big sister, Spike being annoyed at Sweetie constantly trying to sabotage his moves on Rarity, and poor Rarity not knowing what to do to avoid hurting either of their feelings.
They don’t need an “excuse,” magical or otherwise. As long as everyone involved is a consenting adult, nobody needs your permission or approval before entering a relationship. Therefore, whether you think they “should” or “shouldn’t” is entirely irrelevant.
Spike likes Rarity
Rarity likes Trenderhoof
Trenderhoof likes Applejack
And tellingly, none of those crushes goes anywhere. In the sequence, Sweetie Belle liking Spike could easily fit. Spike would never know, and nothing would come of it, but it would be there.
Magic is no excuse. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

I.e. two creatures that don’t actually exist and can therefore have any biology the creator wishes,
