I think you have no idea how storytelling works. Even if they would never show us how they get their cutie marks (which they will) they can’t say that they are the only ponies in Equestria who will never get their cutie marks, the only exception among the ponies of Equestria basically, just because they don’t plan to focus on that in the show.  
Everypony in Equestria gets a cutie mark sooner or later and it is impossible to change that rule for the universe.
 
Also, what do you mean with “due to the nature of the show”? That doesn’t make sense.

Unicorn magic has been shown repeatedly to match eye color if it doesn’t match cutie mark color, and since she basically can’t have a cutie mark due to the nature of the show only allowing so much development, they have to go that route.
